Dear Colleagues,
On behalf of SES, I would like to welcome you all to SMi Group’s 16th annualGlobal MilSatCom conference & exhibition.
As a long term member and lead sponsor, SES is happy to be part of thisprominent military satellite communication conference and exhibition. I amalso particularly proud to have been Chairman of this event for the past 11years and have seen it grow into an industry stalwart over the years.
Due to the global financial and economic constraints, reducingexpenditure is a primary concern for many Governments around the world. To manage the reduction in defence budget and at the same timemaximising their information supremacy is the challenge that is being facedby many Governments in planning their respective defence budgets.
Our strategy, therefore as industry professionals, is to rise to this challengeand continue to develop innovative technologies, from software tosatellites and thereby increase the attractiveness and usefulness of ourproducts and services.
This conference is an ideal platform to hear about these ideas in aknowledge-sharing environment involving decision makers, Governmentrepresentatives, military and other leading international industryprofessionals.
Please join in the question and answer sessions, network with industry peersand learn about new breakthroughs in this defence arena. But most of all, enjoy yourselves at this premier annual event in London.
I look forward to seeing you there.
Yours sincerely,
Gerard Donelan Vice-President Governments and Institutions, SES

Workshop Overview
Satellite technology (e.g., earth observation and satellite AIS) isused as a situational awareness tool due to its global coverageand ability to monitor large geographical areas, primarily incases of natural disasters (e.g., floods and earthquakes). Themore widespread use is hampered by high costs ofmanufacturing and launching satellites as well as infrequentdata updates. The workshop will look at the latesttechnological developments which will considerably reducethe capital and operational costs and increase the datadelivery frequency.
Who Should Attend?
The workshop is aimed at personnel involved in use anddelivery of operational situational awareness tools. Delegateswill get broad understanding of the latest technological trendsand benefits they will bring to end-users.

Hosted by Vladimir Stoiljkovic, Business Development Manager, Satellite Applications Catapult8.30-12.00
Workshop Overview
Satellite services are widely used by the commercial sector andthe military. Reliance on detecting minute signals in a fog of radiofrequency “noise” interference, either unintended or deliberate, isa concern to maintaining assured and reliable communicationslinks to all. This Masterclass describes the technology and toolsused to mitigate interference through commercial sector initiativesand explore how interference is managed and reduced.Presenters from the IRG, SAT Corporation and Newtec will look atthe challenges posed by this important issue, identify current andpotential solutions, describe what is being done within the satellitecommunity to ensure that robust satellite communications can besustained as services rapidly expand.

Martin works with numerous broadcasters andsatellite operators to improve their operational processes andcontrol. In addition, Martin has been an active player in helpingreduce interference and as Executive Director of the SatelliteInterference Reduction Group (IRG) has evolved a global ETSI/DVBCarrier ID (CID) specification for all SCPC/MCPC transmissions(Video & Data) as well as the original NIT CID issued by WBU-ISOGin 2008. He is committed to seeing Carrier ID being rolled out from1st January 2015. In addition, his group has been heavily involvedwith the ITU and major broadcasters in dealing with IntentionalInterference and this has led IRG to initiate new standards andprocesses within the Geolocation industry. IRG supports majorgroups such as APSCC, CASBAA, GVF, SMi, SSPi and WTA in gettingall interference initiatives advanced. Prior to setting up Colem,Martin was an engineer in charge of various BT satellite projects forMadley & Goonhilly earth stations in the UK. His background is bothsatellite and international telecommunications.
