What is a Snowflake?

A snowflake is made up of 1 Ice Crystal.

All snowflakes have 6 sides, the shape is called a hexagonal prism.

Snowflakes are 3 dimensional shapes.

Snowflakes and Temperature

Snowflakes form different shapes based on the temperature and how much moisture is in the air.

Snowflakes and Temperature

When the temperature is 32 degrees Fahrenheit (°F), 2 shapes form called Dendrites and Plates.

Page 5: Snowflakes

Dendrites

A Dendrite Snowflake is an ice crystal that forms in a tree- like multi branch form.

It is what we most think of when we hear the word snowflake.

Plates

A Plate Snowflake is an ice crystal that forms a hexagonal shape in 6 equal pieces, much like a pie.

These snowflakes are symmetrical.

Snowflakes and Temperature

When the temperature is about 20 degrees Fahrenheit (°F), 3 shapes form. These are Needles, Hollow Columns, and Solid Prisms.

Hollow Prisms

A Hollow Prism Snowflake is an ice crystal that forms like a tube with 2 cones inside it.

These are so small that you can only see them under a microscope.

Simple Prisms

A simple prism snowflake is a snowflake that forms as tiny prism or thin plate.

These are rarely smooth, but have dents in them.

Needles

A Needle Snowflake is an ice crystal that forms into a very thin line.

These resemble tiny hairs on your sleeve.

These snowflakes form when the temperature drops to 23 °F.

Snowflakes and Temperature

When the temperature drops to about 15 degrees Fahrenheit (°F), the snowflakes begin to form into what 2 kinds of snowflakes again?

Snowflakes and Temperature

When the temperature drops below -5 degrees Fahrenheit (°F), snowflakes form into what what 2 kinds of snowflakes again?
