Social Networks:Services that ink people with similar interests and provides a means for them to interact over the internet via email, instant messaging , and blog-like posts.
Examples :• Twitter, Blogger, Flicker, Linked, Facebook..etc
Facebook:• Facebook is a social networking website intended to connect
friends, family and business associates. It is the largest of the networking sites, with the runner up being MySpace. It began as a college networking website and has expanded o include anyone and everyone.
Facebook facts:• More than 400 million active users• More than 200 million log in everyday• Average user has 130 friends on facebook• Average user spends > 33 mintutes per day on facebook• Average user belongs to 13 facebook groups
Four Facebook features:• Friending• Posting on walls• Groups• Application
Who uses it and why?• Everyone uses facebook• 800 + million users worldwide• 29% million users in UK• 44% mobile users worldwide• 58% users are female• Female age 18 – 30
• Why?1- Need to belong2-Need for self-presentation
Positive impacts:• Retention potential• Niche relationships • Self- discovery• Professional connections
Negative impacts:• Facebook addition• Appropriate online presentation of self• Self esteem issues• Misleading self representation• Libel and copyright questions• Privacy blow up• Less social interaction• Bad health• Reduce the time of study• Possibility of conflict• Less family concern
Symptoms of Facebook addiction:• Users and their siblings communicate through Facebook , though they
in the same house.• Users check Facebook for updates every hour at their workstation or on
their cell phone.• Users wake up in the morning, and log onto their Facebook account
first.• Users’ Facebook wall is full of status updates, comments, and
applications that they just used.• Users give priority to Facebook over their commitments in professional
and personal life.• Users can not stop thinking about Facebook updates and comments
when they are offline.• Users look forward to get home in the evening so that they can see
what is happening in Facebook.• Users can not go for a day without using Facebook.• Users’ day ends with checking Facebook for that one last time bidding
people 'good night' through their Facebook status update.
How to handle Facebook addiction?• Reduce Facebook tracking• Consider other alternatives• Meet up with your friends• Activate Facebook blocking applications• Use self help CDs• Share you thoughts• Buy a mobile phone with no internet capabilities
