NATURE of

ETYMOLOGY

• It is derived from the Latin word “socius” meaning “companion” or “associate” and the Greek word “logos” for “study.”

What is Sociology?

*The science that deals with the study of society and the social interactions.

*It is concerned with the study of human societies and human behaviour in social settings.

Sociology• Is DIVERSE• Its idea is that “humans are to

be understood in the context of their social life that we are social animals influenced by interaction, social patterns and socialization.”

• At the personal level, sociology investigates the social causes and consequences of such things as romantic love, racial and gender identity, family conflict, and religious faith.

• At the societal level, sociology examines and explains matters like crime and law, poverty and wealth, prejudice and discrimination, and social movements.

• At the global level, sociology studies phenomena such as population growth and migration, war and peace, and economic development.

Sociology offers a distinctive and enlightening way of seeing and understanding the social world in which we live and which shapes our lives.
