Solar EnergyUneven Heating of Earth CAUSES…
Movement of Air Masses
Sea Breeze
Solar (Radiation)
Energy
Radiation = the transfer of energy though space by electromagnetic waves.
Sea Breeze
What do you notice about the temperatures?
Warm LandCool Water
Cool Water Warm Land
Hot air rises

Cool Water Warm Land
Hot air rises

Cool Water Warm Land
Warm air begins to cool as it rises
Sea Breeze
Cool Water Warm Land
Warm Air flows to cooler air

Cooled air Sinks b/c it is more dense

Now… what's different about the temperatures? When the sun is down, we have cooler LAND and warmer WATER.

Heat can be transferred in 3 ways…Conduction, Radiation, Convection
The sun provides heat energy called RADIATION and it creates CONVECTION Currents in our atmosphere.
Label the SEA BREEZE and LAND BREEZE
Sun’s Rays“Uneven Heating of the Earth due to
the curvature of Earth”
• Larger Angle = More intense heat (hotter)
• Acute Angle = less intense heat (cooler)

WindMovement of air from
high pressure to low pressure
Wind moves from High Pressure Low Pressure
• Cold Temperature– Molecules closer together– “packed tightly”– More dense = more
pressure
• Warmer Temperatures– Molecules further apart– “unpacked”– Less Dense = Less Pressure
Molecules want to spread out, yet… still same amount!
Wind blows from cold to warm
Earth’s Rotation
• Earth rotates (spins) on its axis (very fast).• This rotation “pulls” the air as the Earth turns.• This is called the Coriolis Effect!
Jet Stream – upper level winds
• The jet stream is located in the Stratosphere!
Global Wind Patterns (mid level)
“Trade Winds”
Global Wind Patterns (mid level)
“Westerlies”• From which direction
are the trade winds blowing in the US?
• Which direction are they heading?
Oceans What effect do they have on Weather?
Keeps the area around the water cooler(water does not change temperature)
Ocean Currents movewarm water… North
