Ophelia's Funeral and Encounter scenes

• The penultimate scene of the play begins with the two clowns digging a grave for the late Ophelia.

• Religion and the state rules.• This quickly leads them into a discussion of

the impact of politics on the decision.• They present Ophelia's case from both

positions And than..,• The Second Gravedigger exits as Hamlet

and Horatio enter..• Hamlet and Horatio enter at a distance and

watch gravediggers work.

• Suddenly, the funeral procession for Ophelia enters the churchyard, including Claudius, Gertrude, Laertes, and many mourning courtiers.

Shakespeare. >>Johnson said that "Shakespeare is very

realistin in his portrayal of the world. In the real world the suffering of one person has hardly any effect on the life of the other persons."

• The Ghost scene suggests that the ghost has an even greater significance which is related to the development of the character and theme of the play.

• Supernatural and the importance of religion.

• The ghost in Hamlet no doubt performs an important dramatic function.

• Act1 Scene 1 :• The Ghost appears first to a duo of soldiers. • Barnardo and Marcellus and a visitor to Denmark, Horatio.• Horatio asks the ghost to speak.• Horatio's questions

• Act 1 Scene 4 : In his second appearance,• The battlement with Hamlet, Horatio, and Marcellus. • Waiting for the ghost.• Marcellus then gets to say the really cool line, "Something is rotten in the state of Denmark."• Horatio and his friends beg him ( Hamlet ) not to go alone, but he does anyway, driven by curiosity. • The ghost leads Hamlet away for a private conversation.
