My mom - Dec. 2004 Stage II Breast Cancer Found her own cancer

through self-exam Radiation and chemotherapy Later treatment after my

Me 8 months pregnant - Nov. 2005 Detected lump Had son Mazzen a

few days after this picture was taken

Went to family practitioner (Dr. Redd) in December


December 2004 First ultrasound Second ultrasound in

February - I almost didn’t go!


March 2006 - Biopsy and results This is how old my

children were on the day I found out I had cancer

Dr. Redd called me Dr. Redd referred me

to Dr. McCoy - a surgeon!


March 2006 - Mammogram results I’m 31 years old Not too horrible Confirmed what

biopsy had told me - that I did have cancer - Stage I

Wouldn’t have had a mammogram until age 40


Late March 2006 - Genetic Testing


Late March 2006 - Genetic Testing Dr. Quinetta Edwards Counseled me and

my family


April 2006 - Lumpectomies 1 & 2 This is Dr. Petrie! He was my mom’s

surgeon. He’s from South Africa. He is very kind and very

good at explaining the procedures.

Recommended a port in my chest.


April 2006 - Start Chemo Dr. Lloyd Connie - Dr. Lloyd’s nurse Kenny and Colleen -

phlebotomists Maria - my main chemo

other chemo nurses Chemo drugs and shots


April 2006 - Genetic Testing Results

BRCA-1 Positive: Genetic Mutation

Chance of getting another breast cancer = 70%

Chance of getting ovarian cancer = 40%

Mom has, one sister, sons may have.


April 2006 - Hair starts to fall out


May 2006 - Blood clot

Radiology lady Lovenox and Coumadin


Laughter is best medicine


May 2006 - Maria (my chemo

nurse) is a great help and very supportive.


June 2006 - Mazzen hospitalized I start Taxol Mazzen in hospital -

unable to breathe He may have asthma

like me. Nurses very patient

and helped him when I was unable to do so.


July 2006 - Things are going on


The summer of chemo Infusion room Nurses set the tone Loving and caring

environment Nurses are very

patient and good listeners


The summer of chemo Mazzen gets his first

tooth I consult with Dr.

Schlessinger - hysterectomy and oophorectomy


The summer of chemo At the beach we put

up a tent Sun and chemo don’t

mix!


August 2006 Eyebrows, eyelashes,

nose hair gone Chemo is over, but

side effects still around


Sept. 2006 - First Preventative Surgeries

Dr. Schlessinger performs hysterectomy and oophorectomy

Sept. 2006 - Race for the Cure


October 2006 - Bilateral mastectomy and beginning of reconstruction

Dr. Petrie performed the bilateral mastectomy

Dr. Wald placed expanders beneath the chest wall


Oct. 2006 - Double mastectomy

My nurse is a former Sonora HS Medical Careers student!


Nov. 2006 - March 2007 Dr. Wald - “pumps up”

expanders once a month

Kirsten, his physician’s assistant is very sensitive and understanding


All surgeries Nurses were top-

notch Anesthesiologists

were funny, personable

in, expanders taken out: “exchange”

Life now Energy is back Blood levels are

normal I feel great! I treasure each day! I hold much respect
