Sophie Muller

Background

Sophie Muller is a London based director who has worked with various musicians to produce some amazing music videos as well as some spectacular shot films. She attended St Martin’s and the Royal College of Art.

Early works

Muller’s career began in the 1980s where she was an assistant director of the Horror/Thriller Company of Wolves. She also edited The Walk by Eurythmics, she later went on to work on 13 of Eurythmics track between 1982 and 1990. She most notably has worked with Annie Lennox and Blur throughout the 1990s.

Visual Style

Muller tends to portray the band in a room performing live with limited narrative. Instead she portrays the band as the main focus and allocates each musician

a portion of footage, usually a few seconds on each or one before moving on with the video as seen in Coldplay’s In my place and Blur’s Song 2.

Muller has directed loads of videos and has worked with artists such as Sophie Ellis-Baxter, The Killers, Pink, Maroon 5 and Coldplay. Muller’s style is to use the band in her videos and centre the whole video around them. She rarely puts the focus on actors with the exception of “Mr Brightside” (above) where there is narrative element however she still focuses it on the band throughout.

Recent projects

Muller’s recent works include Brandon Flowers’ Only the young which incorporates her house style of depicting the band/artist as the main focus. She also has worked on Cheryl Cole’s Promise this.

Why I chose her?

I like Muller’s style of including the band and focusing on them in the video because that is what the video should be about. I will include her style in my work.
