Forming - Team members learn about each other at hand. - Problems might arise in forming stage:O unclear objectivesO uninvolvement, uncommitted membersO ConfusionO Low moraleO Hidden feelingsO Poor listening
How to manage these problems
OBy introducing them to one another (quiet drawn and not left out).
OGood communication to ensure the team to understand and on what needs to be achieved.
Storming - As members continue to work, they will engage each other in arguments about the structure of the group which often are significantly emotional and illustrate a struggle for status in the team.- Problems might arise in storming stage :O conflict over who will control the teamO lack of cohesionO failure, inconsistencyO anger
How to manage this problems?
Oclarifying work goals, individual roles and objectives. (so they become more focus)
Oteam rules such as collaboration and sharing maybe developed. (give clear indication why rules needed)
Norming- Characterized by close
relationship and cohesiveness.- Problems might arise from
norming stage :O opening risky issuesO members may begin to fear the
inevitable future breakup of the groupO they may resist change of any sort.
How to manage these problems?
Orequiring the balanced focus on people and work
Oteam members will feel more comfortable in their roles and in working with the others.
Performance- a steady-state is achieved, where
team reaches and optimal level of performance.
- Problems might arise from performance stage:
O easy to slip into a happy and lower-performing family
O target the people in an ever-increasing focus on the task at hand.
How to manage these problems?
OLeader must focus and control the members to prevent these problems from happening.
Adjourning - team members disband after finished doing tasks. - problems might arise in adjourning stage :O Team members will feel depressed
over losing camaraderie and friendships.
How to manage these problems
OFocus on wrapping up activities (farewell party, etc.)
OThis requires the skills of change management to be deployed, for example in celebrating the successes of the past.
