Stockton Space Program
Patch Competition
Background• Stockton Space Program
• Competition to design an experiment to test effects of microgravity• Students participate. Work in groups.
• Winning experiment will be sent to International Space Station (ISS) and performed by astronauts
• Purpose• Teach students how science is performed by doing real science• Mimic the process that scientists follow to do their research• Expand the frontiers of microgravity research• Promote Stockton• Engage community - get people excited about and interested in science.
• Patch competition• 2 mission patches will sent to ISS with experiment• Result of design competitions• Stockton students + middle/high school students
Patch Competition - Overview• History: mission patches have been a part of spaceflight since
the 1960’s.• Competition: design mission patch to accompany experiment• Winning design will go to space• Mission 11: Launch from Cape Canaveral, Florida on SpaceX
Dragon capsule/Falcon 9 rocket. June 2017• 4-8 weeks in space on ISS• Travel 400,000 miles each day. Altitude of 26o miles.• Return: displayed at Stockton with certificate indicating it
traveled to space.• Cloth patches will be produced.
Patch Competition - Requirements• Design should connect Stockton, science, and space.• Submitted on paper. 3.5 x 3.5 inches.• No restriction on ink. Can be black & white or color.
Computer or hand drawn.• Only paper and ink. Not multilayered. No glue, tape, etc.
• Judges: panel of participating faculty and consultant.
• Decision based on artistic design and content.
