SKATEBOARD BUILD PROGAM 2011 / 2012 SCHOOL YEAR
MISSION
STOKED’S MISSION IS TO PROMOTE PERSONAL DEVELOPMENT, ACADEMIC ACHIEVEMENT, AND HEALTHY LIVING TO UNDER-SERVED YOUTH THROUGH ACTION SPORTS CULTURE.

+ STOKED WAS FOUNDED IN 2005 TO CREATE OPPORTUNITIES FOR UNDER-SERVED NEW YORK CITY YOUTH TO LEARN ACTION SPORTS
+ IN 2006, STOKED EXPANDED ITS PROGRAMS TO LOS ANGELES
+ SINCE ITS INCEPTION, STOKED HAS SERVED OVER 1100 NEW YORK CITY AND LOS ANGELES YOUTH
HISTORY
+ 70% OF YOUTH RECEIVE FREE OR REDUCED LUNCH AT THEIR PUBLIC SCHOOLS
+ 93% OF YOUTH ARE BLACK, HISPANIC, AND ASIAN
+ STOKED RETAINS 92% OF YOUTH PARTICIPANTS FROM YEAR TO YEAR
+100% OF YOUTH WHO PARTICIPATED IN STOKED’S MENTORING PROGRAM HAVE GRADUATED FROM HIGH SCHOOL

OUR MENTORING PROGRAM TEACHES LIFE SKILLS TO YOUTH AND THEIR MENTORS WHILE ALSO TEACHING THEM SKATEBOARDING, SNOWBOARDING, AND SURFING TOGETHER. YOUTH LEARN: + COMMUNICATION & NETWORKING SKILLS + VALUES SUCH AS RESPECT, TRUST, AND RESILIENCY + GOAL SETTING, CONFRONTING CHALLENGES, AND OVERCOMING OBSTACLES

STOKED TO SERVE OPEN TO ALL YOUTH IN THE STOKED COMMUNITY, STOKED TO SERVE TEACHES YOUTH THE IMPORTANCE OF GIVING BACK TO THEIR COMMUNITIES AND THAT COMMUNITY SERVICE CAN BE FUN AND REWARDING. STOKED TO SERVE COMBINES A MORNING COMMUNITY SERVICE PROJECT WITH AN AFTERNOON SKATE OR SURF SESSION.!
+ STOKED PLUS: 10-12 WEEK WORKSHOPS AND AFTER-SCHOOL PROGRAMS BASED WITHIN THE FRAMEWORK OF ACTION SPORTS, OFFERING AN ALTERNATIVE WAY TO REINFORCE ACADEMIC CONCEPTS AND TEACH LIFE SKILLS TO STUDENTS DURING THE SCHOOL YEAR

+ STOKED PLUS BUILDS COMMUNITY, A CULTURE OF SUCCESS, AND CAN BE USED AS A RECRUITMENT TOOL
+ USED TO INCREASE SCHOOL ATTENDANCE, AS CREDIT RECOVERY IN SCIENCE OR ART, AND PROVIDES ALTERNATIVE ENRICHMENT TO STUDENTS
WHY STOKED PLUS
+ SKATEBOARD BUILD IS A 10-WEEK WORKSHOP SERIES THAT MEETS TWICE A WEEK IN NEW YORK CITY PUBLIC SCHOOLS. THE WORKSHOPS TEACH STUDENTS ABOUT BASIC SCIENCE AND MATH CONCEPTS, LIFE SKILLS SUCH AS TIME MANAGEMENT AND PROJECT PLANNING, AND HOW TO BUILD SKATEBOARDS FROM SCRATCH.
SKATEBOARD BUILD
+ (WEEKS 1-2): STOKED’S PROGRAMS ARE ROOTED IN A FOUNDATION OF PERSONAL DEVELOPMENT AND TRAINING. STUDENTS MUST COMPLETE ALL 4 LIFE-SKILL WORKSHOPS TO BEGIN THE PROGRAM. FOCUS: PERSONAL GOALS, COMMUNICATION SKILLS, TEAMWORK, & DIVERSITY.
SKATEBOARD BUILD: LIFE SKILLS
+ (WEEK 3): IN TEAMS OF 4, STUDENTS GLUE TOGETHER AND VACUUM PRESS STRIPS OF MAPLE WOOD CREATING THE FOUNDATION FOR A SINGLE SKATE DECK. THIS STAGE MUST BE COMPLETED IN 7 MINUTES. FOCUS: COMPOUNDS OF CHEMISTRY, PRESSURE OF PHYSICS.
SKATEBOARD BUILD: GLUING
+ [WEEKS 4-6]: STUDENTS SAND AND SHAPE BOARDS BY HAND WHILE THE INSTRUCTOR LEADS DISCUSSIONS ON ACTION SPORTS CULTURE, CAREER OPPORTUNITIES, AND DESIGN INSPIRATION. FOCUS: PATIENCE, DETERMINATION, ATTENTION TO DETAIL.
SKATEBOARD BUILD: SANDING/SCRAPING
+ (WEEKS 7-10): STUDENTS BRAINSTORM, DRAFT, DRAW, AND CUT STENCILS OF INDIVIDUAL DESIGN IDEAS. THEY THEN APPLY THE DESIGNS TO THE BLANK BOARDS AND PAINT THE BOARDS. PROFESSIONAL ARTISTS CO-TEACH THIS PORTION OF THE PROGRAM. FOCUS: SELF EXPRESSION, CREATIVITY, PREPARED EXECUTION.
SKATEBOARD BUILD: ART & DESIGN
+ THE STUDENTS PUT ON THEIR OWN ART SHOW FOR THEIR SCHOOL, COMMUNITY, AND FAMILIES
+ IN 2011, WE’RE PARTNERING WITH LOCAL ART GALLERIES TO HAVE A PROFESSIONAL LEVEL ART SHOW
+ TEACHES YOUTH TO TAKE PRIDE IN THEIR WORK, PRESENT THEIR IDEAS, AND HAVE A SENSE OF ACCOMPLISHMENT

COMPLETED SKATEBOARDS
+ AS REWARD FOR COMPLETING THE SKATEBOARD BUILD PROGRAM, STOKED INVITES YOUR STUDENTS TO ATTEND OUR SNOWBOARDING, SKATEBOARDING, AND SURFING PROGRAM FREE OF CHARGE.
+ STUDENTS ARE ALSO INVITED TO APPLY TO OUR MENTORING PROGRAM.
