Computer Science Standards: State Boards Writing The Code For A Network Of Success
www.nasbe.org
Computer Science: Industry Potential• The U.S. has over half a million unfilled computing
jobs.
• Computing jobs are projected to grow at 2x the rate of any other job over the next 10 years.
• Like History, Math or English, Computer Science is recognized by educators and parents alike as a critical skill for career readiness.
www.nasbe.org
Will Our Labor Force Be Ready?• Most states have not yet adopted computer science
learning standards.
• Only 25% of schools teach computer science at all.
• With no foundational support for students to succeed in the field of computer science, our nation will fail to capitalize on this important industry trend.

State Boards Are The Answer• 45 state boards of education have authority to design
and implement education standards.
• While nearly all stakeholders recognize that computer science is a key component of a well rounded education, only five states have set computer science standards.
• The convergence of these two realities pose an unprecedented opportunity to channel the flood waters of innovation.

Forming Coalitions For The Future• Two front-line efforts collaborating with states to lay
foundational computer science standards:
• A “K-12 Computer Science Framework,” being developed by Code.org and their partners (including 13 states).
• A report on identifying and guiding students toward curriculum pathways that lead to computer science jobs, being developed by The Southern Regional Education Board and their partners.

This Panel Will Discuss:• What Needs To Be Done To Adopt Computer Science
Standards In All Schools
• The Benefits of Students Learning Computer Science
• Best Practices and Lessons Learned for States and Districts Looking To Adopt Computer Science Standards
