Step 1: Describe the Topic

Page 4: Synectics Model

Alcoholic Beverage

Page 6: Synectics Model

Step 1: Describe the Topic● In your groups, discuss the term

Alcohol and come up with 6 descriptors for the word

● Go to www.pollev.com/khoward and enter the 6 words (One at a Time) on the poll

● You can include both positive and negative terms (preferable)

Page 7: Synectics Model

Step 2: Create Direct Analogies● As a group, identify a famous person

that reminds you of as many of the words in the word cloud as possible (enter on poll)

● Provide the rationale for your choice and be prepared to discuss

Page 8: Synectics Model

Step 3: Describe Personal Analogies● View reality from the perspective of

the person you just identified● How do you think it would feel to be

that person?● Enter as many responses as you like to

the poll

Page 9: Synectics Model

Step 4: Identify Compressed Conflicts● From the words used to describe feelings

about the person identified, select pairs of words that seem to be in conflict

● Enter your selected compressed conflict combination on the poll

● As a class, we will select the combination that provides the best compressed conflict

Page 10: Synectics Model

Step 5: Create a New Direct AnalogyUsing the selected compressed conflict, create another direct analogy - what other object, animal, etc. reminds you of both of the words in the selected compressed conflict?

Page 11: Synectics Model

Step 6: Reexamine the Original Topic● Compare the new analogy to the

original term “Alcohol”● What are your thoughts as to how the

new analogy represents the original term?

● Does this comparison bring any new images to mind?

Group Activity● In your group, determine a topic that

you wish to explore with the Synectics Model

● Locate or create (Animoto) a video that introduces your topic to students

● Prepare a presentation with “Slides” for using the model to examine your chosen topic

● Post link for slide presentation to Blackboard

Slide Presentation Elements1. Title slide with names of all present and

contributing members of group (1)2. Topic introduction slide (2)3. Topic introduction video slide (3)4. Examples of the following (each with own

slide):a. Three or more possible direct analogies (4)b. An example of a personal analogy with

rationale (5)c. Three possible compressed conflicts (6)d. A new direct analogy for one compressed

conflict (7)

Individual Synectics Model

● Using the same format described on the previous slide, create an individual Synectics Model slide presentation using Google Slides

● Submit the link for your Slides presentation (and write-up) to Blackboard before next class session

● Complete your lesson write-up using the posted template (see “witches” model on page 167 of text for sample) and post it to Blackboard
