SYNOPSIS NO: 4 READER TITLE: FROM”TOWARDS A CRITICAL REGIONLISM”

AUTHOR: KENNETH FRAMPTON

In this article will be discussed about the contradiction between critical regionalism and world culture

and the resistance of the place form. In the suggested essay which is “The Grid and the Pathway” by

Alex Tzonis and Liliane Lefaivre. They stated that regionalism bear the hallmark of ambiguity while

associated with reform and liberation at the same time with repression and chauvinism. In my

opinion, follow by different region of state, it reflect by the past and connect it with its own policy of

the places, it create its own identity of the region and both liberation and chauvinism can be occurred

at the same time. There will definitely have different diversity of group which was only supported in

certain position exaggeratedly, there is what form a regional characteristic. In addition, I agree that

programs can create a relationship between the designer and the user, it is used to transfer

information and needs from each one to the other one.

Architect Hamilton Harwell Harris wrote about the regionalism of restriction that is another type of

regionalism. It also called as the Liberation of Regionalism. It is a manifestation of a region. It is

because regional is only stated by not yet emerged to any where else. To express regionalism in

architecture way can only building, with lots of building built at same period and same place, only

that can be sufficiently general, varied, forceful to take attention and vision from human being. This is

how critical regionalism displayed and global city together.

On the other hand, geographer Jean Gottman discussed about the megalopolis development, Jean

Gottman claimed that human beings are no longer be able to maintain defined urban forms.

However, due to architectural aspect , we as an architect different from urban planner, we work well

in contextual respond instead of acting it as a free standing object. We should have bring out identity

of the place. If we apply critical regionalism to the design, we may have to consider the limitation of

the space and characteristic of the place as the contectual respond instead of just individual building.

The programs inside should qualify the quality of space and address the issue somehow solve the

issue in term of the spatial organization between interior to exterior.
