To be and modal verbs

– Subj + verb + complement, (opp) V + SPN?– She is , isn’t she ?– We will , won’t we ?– They can , can’t they?

– EXCEPTION:– I am , aren’t I?– I am , am I not ?

• Subj + neg verb + complement, V + SPN?• She isn’t , is she ?• We won’t , will we ?• They can’t , can they?

• EXCEPTION (contraction with I NOT “to be”:• I’m not am I?

• Homework sheet in your student book.

• Journal suggestion:– Westerners don’t believe in being shy about our

talents and abilities. If we are good at something, we say we are good. Asian people sometimes think we are arrogant. Asian people never seem to say they are good at anything. We think that is lying.

• Write about this cultural difference. The lesson wasn’t too painful, was it?
