Innovator: Mr Parthasarahi Mukhopadhy, Bengal Engineering and Science University

Page 2: Technology brief 50_technologies By Gov. Of India

Proposal Description

The technology consists of using engineered and treated bamboo for constructing houses for population „Below Poverty Line‟ (BPL). The strength properties of the bamboo species used have been investigated through experimental research. Their treatment method is an improvement upon the existing Indian

code-specified treatment processes and is applied for patent. The bamboo “floor-boards” of such bamboo houses consists of bunched bamboo strips, placed on bamboo beams. 25 mm long #18 nails are partially inserted in these. Then 25 mm PCC is cast as flooring, which contains the not-inserted upper part of the nail. Floors, thus constructed, are usable as conventional pucca floor. The bamboo “wall-boards” are made by bunching bamboo strips along their width and fixing the same on the wall structure. Peripheral walls are finished by cement plastering on the outer side, after partly inserting 20 mm #18 nails. Any type of wall finishing (Snowcem paints etc) is possible on it. Here, bamboo replaces steel and portion of cement in the floors and completely replaces brick and cement mortar in the walls.

Technology Name – VAJRA(Vessel desk)

Innovator: Mr Raghunath P Lohar, Center for innovation and business acceleration

Proposal Description It‟s not just a problem; it‟s a question of human dignity. They carried it over thousands of years from Stone Age to the year 2013. But still they are doing it...!!!... now we have a solution. All over the globe from developing to underdeveloped countries, there are over billion of labors involved in the work drudgery either in farm field, construction or industrial site etc. their daily job is to lift,

carry and move heavy objects over head. Such a tremendous 30-50 kg load over their head not only for one day but for their entire life. According to survey issued by world health organization, over 30% of such labors daily faced physical problems from body pain, back pain to severe injuries and it increases medical expenses but most of them could not afford it. Such type of continuous job results in cumulative disorders in early stage of life. But why still those people carrying load over head in this so called modern age?? They don‟t need cranes or high tech machines; they need

a simple affordable solution. here is why VAJRA comes to existence.

Technology Name – Design and Development of Integrated Plant for Mechanized

Production of Value Added Traditional Indian Dairy Products with Better Product Quality

and Economy

Innovator: Dr Sunil Patel, Dairy Engineering Department, S M C College of Dairy

Proposal Description The Indian value addition industry, especially the food and dairy sector, cannot escape from this vital fact – “Globalization has created a lot of opportunities but with stiffer competition.” The value addition is the most important aspect through which India can visualize a great boom in its dairy and food sector exports. The Indian food industry has witnessed substantial growth and is valued over Rs 70,000 crore and is expected to reach Rs. 95,382 crore by 2012. The country is also the

top milk producing country in the world. The Indian dairy industry has registered phenomenal

growth from an annual output of about 40 million tonnes of milk in the mid 1980s to about 128 million tonnes in 2012. The age-old small-scale techniques for Traditional Indian Dairy Products (TIDP) cannot be adopted for industrial large-scale production, thanks to rising demand and health awareness. Regardless of the volume of production, they are manufactured primarily in jacketed kettles where possibilities to control and optimise heat treatment processes are very limited.

Concequently, inefficient use of energy, poor hygiene, sanitation and non-uniform product quality associated with rural scale operation crept into large scale manufacture." With rapid growth in these sectors, the technology and design of process equipment is also under going changes. The small-scale technology for the preparation of indigenous products can not be exploited for large scale industrial production. One of the strategies to enhance our presence in world dairy market is

Page 3: Technology brief 50_technologies By Gov. Of India

to promote R & D of value added quality products besides improving the traditional dairy products by innovative techniques, designing of equipment and mechanization for the manufacture of value

added dairy products. This innovative Integrated Plant for Mechanized Production of Value Added Traditional Indian Dairy Products designed and developed will facilitate mechanized producion of TIDP like, Basundi, Kulfi mix, Kheer, Khoa, Peda, Thabdi, Burfi, Gajar Halwa, Dudhi Halwa, and Halwasan with better hygienic, rheological qualitis and improved shelf-life at lower cost of

processing. This innovation will serve better quality TIDP to the consumer and will also increase the potential for its exports. This innovation will also help in commercialization and to promote small entrepreneurship through Public Private Partnership (PPP).

Technology Name – DeTect (Normal/High Temperature Defect Detection Technology)

Innovator: Mr Tarun Kumar Mishra, Indian Institute of Technology Madras

Proposal Description

In industries there have been a long standing demand for a technology which can tell them a priori about the defects which can lead to accidents and catastrophes. Particularly, in nuclear and oil industries, this demand has been growing ever since. This has led to a tremendous research in this area. Many of the pipelines in these industries are insulated and operate at high temperatures. Currently, these are inspected only during annual maintenance shutdown by stripping of the insulation. The insulation is then replaced after inspection at considerable costs. Using the technology proposed here, two benefits are anticipated. The cost replacement of insulation can be significantly reduced and the inspection can be done more often and hence the reliability of these pipelines can be improved. My technology uses a special material to generate ultrasonic guided waves within any material, especially long pipelines. This traveling wave can detect any defect which comes along in its way. By doing some

calculations, we can easily tell if the defect can cause any potential damage to the standing structure. This technology can reduce the costs for inspection by about 60%. This sensor can also work at about 350C which is about 200C higher temperature than any other sensor available in market. This makes it a very potential and unique device to monitor pipelines that carry hot chemicals and fluids, in addition to normal pipelines.

Technology Name – Bamboo Greenhouse

Innovator: Mr Arupratan Ghosh Proposal Description

It is a multi-technology innovation involving bamboo curing, structural designing, foundation, and air removal rate of greenhouse, which creates a standard model of ''bamboo greenhouse'' suitable for tropical humid climate and comparable to conventional greenhouse made up of GI/MS/Wood. ORIENTATION FOR BAMBOO Unlike other trees/plants, the stems of bamboo, or culms, emerges from ground almost at their full diameter and attains its total height within one season (3-4 months) without any branching and leafing. After attaining the full height, the branches extend

Page 5: Technology brief 50_technologies By Gov. Of India

from the nodes and leafing in the branches occurs. Next year, the pulpy wall of each culm slowly hardens, which is called lignifying. During the third year, the culm hardens further and silicification

of outer tube-wall occurs. After 3rd year the bamboo is considered fully mature with necessary hardness and strength, particularly the tensile strength. Then bamboo or culm should be harvested or cut down for necessary use. If the bamboos or culms were not harvested after attaining full maturity (3-4 yrs of age) then over the next 2–5 years (depending on species), fungus and mold

begin to form on the outside of the culm, which eventually penetrate and overcome the culm. Thus, around 5 – 8 years of age (depending on species and climate), the fungal and mold growth cause the culm to collapse and decay. Hence, the treated mature bamboo in its size, lightness, strength, etc, is an extreme product of nature.

Technology Name – Universal Compactor: UniPactor

Innovator: Mr Vindhyavesh Tripathi, Shree Vindhya Mechanicals

Proposal Description

This document highlights the important points associated with the business model and the revenue

generation scheme of our new venture „UNIPACTOR‟.

It is to be noted that in the recent years, the emphasis on having sustainable development

through the use of green, clean and renewable fuel sources has increased considerably. Various

forms of such renewable sources are available but most of them require high capital input for

installation (e.g. solar power plant, wind farm, etc.).

The friendliest and cheapest of them all: biomass1 is abundantly available in all the parts of the

country (India) and can be procured at very low costs from various farm owners, villages,

municipalities, etc. This ensures us that the input side of the process is secured.

We then come to the question of procuring and processing it. This requires large amounts of

expenditures in logistics (biomass being very light in weight, 100-150 kg/m3) which makes this

business unfeasible for small investors.

Several pelletizing2 technologies have come up which ensure good quality pellets from pulverised3

biomass henceforth condensing it about 10 times in volume (1000-1200 kg/m3). This technology

ensures that if you use well dried biomass (moisture content~10-14%), you will be able to use the

produced pellets with efficiencies close or sometimes even better than wood.

Even with the use of pelletisers, the problem of logistics remains if you try to setup a centralised

plant for production of pellets. Hence a decentralised pellet production scheme was designed so as

to minimise the expenditure in logistics of loose biomass. This will require some basic steps listed

as follows:

Demonstration of pelletisers to potential holders of raw materials

Identification of a local entrepreneur who can invest ₹100,000

Disbursement of pelletiser to the investor

The investor will supervise local collection and pelletization of biomass

Our company will buy all what is produced by him

This brings us to the part two of the design where we will setup a torrefaction4 plant and run it

through the inputs of all local pelletisers. The major tasks are listed below:

Design of a torrefaction plant

Route optimisation of the vehicle for running between pelletizers

Pellets torrefied to produce bio coal, syngas and bio tar

Collection, sorting and packing of bio coal and bio tar and dispatch

The design of the plan henceforth involves:

Decentralised collection and pelletization of biomass

Centralised torrefaction of pellets to produce bio coal and other products

Collection, packing and logistics

Technology Name – Vertial Axis Wind Mill (VAWM)

Innovator: Mr Brijesh Maurya, Tejas Oturkar, Pratik Lotia Proposal Description

This technology includes a Vertical Axis Wind Turbine. When less amount of space is available for setup of wind turbines, the VAWM is more efficient than the traditional Horizontal Axis Wind

Turbines. In urban areas, space availabilty is low and there is a need to generate energy through renewable sources (clean green energy) to cut down the amount of carbon footprints. VAWM surves as a perfect example for setting up efficient green energy solutions. The turbine system

rotates due to the wind, thus generating high rotational mechanical power. The Blades are specially designed so as having better contact areas with the wind & hence sweep a large volume to generate a high torque. The angle of contact is so adjusted such that it this overcomes the problem of pulsatory torque which was a drawback of the traditional wind turbines. The blade material is made of high quality carbon re-inforced fiber which can resist negative effects due to intense solar light and other environmental changes. The mechanical energy generated is transferred to an an alternator via a gear system which dircectly converts mechanical power in AC

(Alternating Current) power. The energy generated can be fed in to energy grid via proper mechanism.

Proposal Description

The basic day to day routine work activities releasing enormous amount of pressure can be

fruitfully used to drive power using the natural tendency of some elements. We have devised

simple sandwich structure that uses the routine pressure and gets activated. This can be

miniaturized to be small enough to fit into a shoe as MOBILE SHOE CHARGER whose need and

demand is clear from the below stats. India has total 800 million cellular subscribers (TRAI 2010).

Lets say 50 % of them have 24-7 power supply to charge their cell phones. We still got a market

of 400 million and increasing to cater with our product. Breaking down the market we find that

there are 60,000 dabbawalas existing currently in the Mumbai . Another major segment is the

music loving tech savvy youth of the country, which needs ear phones plugged in during most time

of the day. The fact says that the smarter the phone weaker the battery life so this technology can

be a life line to them.
