Setting• My observation took place in a 4th

grade advanced learning classroom. There were 24 students present (14 boys, 10 girls, one hispanic, 11 African Americans, and 12 Caucasians). Seven of these students are in the gifted program.

• The lesson reviewed math concepts, including: decimals, rounding, estimation, and fractional decimals

The Use of Technology to Support the Curriculum

•A Promethean Board was used to engage students in hands-on review of math concepts.

•Students demonstrated their skills using a Blue Tooth instrument to click/drag and write on the board.

Differences Noticed by Educator

• Students are motivated to learn and stay focused on the lesson

• Students love to participate and use various forms of technology in the class.

• Interaction with on-line games and websites create enthusiasm over the typical worksheets.

• Improved grades and higher test scores.

Obstacles and Support Issues

• “Reeling” students back in to change classes can be difficult at times.

• Difficulties with Blue Tooth happen occasionally, considering the equipment is not hard-wired.

• Calling for support services can take up to two to three weeks to get a response. (The teacher reported very little use last year due to wiring problems that went unanswered.)
