Language is a system of arbitrary vocal symbols use for human communication. English has
four skills of language those are Listening, Speaking, Reading, and Writing. In writing we have
problems or difficulties there are: First, how to motivate the students to write something in English.
Second, the teachers are not creative enough in teaching writing subject. Most of the teachers have
not used media to teach. Meanwhile, if teacher use media, it can stimulate the students’ motivation.
Third, when the students write, the students just write based on their imagination, he or she doesn’t
have the real object. It can help students to write, because the students will get the vocabulary easier
from that object (picture). The main problem is the effectiveness of picture to develop the students’
writing ability.
The writing skills are complex and sometimes difficult to teach, requiting mastery not only of
grammatical and rhetorical devices but also of conceptual and judgemental elements. According to
Jeremy Harmer and Roy Kingsbury (Writing English Language Tests) said that, an excellent device
for providing both a purpose and content for writing is the use of pictures. A picture or series of
pictures not only provides the students with the basic material for their composition but also
stimulates their imaginative powers. The purpose of using picture is to develop students’
vocabulary, concepts about word, and sentence and paragraph structures through reading and
content area such as math, science, social studies, and health. Therefore, by having vocabularies,
students can write easier. By using pictures students can develop their vocabularies.
Research methodology is absolutely needed in any research, due to get the result of the
research as accurate, effective, and efficient as possible. The writer will use descriptive method as
methodology of research, because the descriptive method is suitable to conduct this research and
can receive the maximal result of research. This method is described whatever the research take
while the research conducts with test and questionnaire to know student’s progress and to know the
result of this method. The writer takes on SMKN 1 Lelea at first level as place to conduct the
research and collecting data. In SMKN 1 Lelea students, the writer only take X clothing 2 as the
sample of this research. The writer was conducting the research on 3 juni until 7 juni. The writer
also uses qualitative as technique to collect the data. The writer can describe the result of test.
At SMKN 1 Lelea in class X clothing 2 have 39 of students. From the result in appendix 2,
the writer can describe the result of test. At SMKN 1 Lelea in class X clothing 2 have 39 of
students. The result of test are 14 students get good 70-79 point (36%), 12 students get pass 60-69
point (31%), and 13 students get weak 50-59 point (33%). So the result from the test is fair. By
picture as media of teaching writing also has several factor that influence the students writing
ability matery, such as sentences structure, suitable vocabularies usage, and comprehension. By
picture can develop the students writing ability, stimulate the students’ motivation, and making the
students are interest in teaching writing.
