TEXTUAL ANALYSIS. ( MALE GAZE THEORY)

What is the male gaze theory?

• Gaze is how someone looks at something else, this meaning has been adapted to ‘ The Male Gaze’ theory. Its main features are:

• The representation of women as a sexual fantasy and from a heterosexual male point of view

• Scopophilia- the pleasure involved in looking at other peoples bodies 3) Objectification of female characters

• Patriarchal society• Objectification of female characters• Active male and passive female • Men – controlling subjects• Women as an image • Men do the looking and the women are there to be looked at • Needs of the male ego

• This establishing shot supports the male gaze theory, because of the scopophilia ( the pleasure involved in looking at other peoples bodies.) This is because the girl in the video is wearing tight fitting clothing, which a heterosexual man would find attractive.

• This extreme close up of the mans face, shows the man reaction to the woman's body, this furthers the support for the male gaze theory, since you can see the reflection of the woman in the mans eyes. This links to the ,men do the looking and the women are there to be looked at’ feature from the male gaze theory.

• The wide shot shows the woman's attractive body, this feature would be attractive for heterosexual men. This also shows that the women is the image since the entire focus is on her because she is in the middle of the shot with nothing around her that will distract people.

In this close up shot it clearly shows all the feminine features on the women's face, ( prominent cheek bones, big lips and long hair). A heterosexual man would find all theses features attractive, this links to the Male Gaze theory because it makes women look like an image.
