‘The 1975’ are a rock band from Manchester forming in 2002. The band
consists of members: Matt Healy (lead vocals and rhythm guitar), Adam Hann
(lead guitar), Ross MacDonald (bass) and George Daniel (drums).
The band heavily conform to the rock genre via their image and formation- they
typically sport black and white clothing and stick to the traditional line-up of a
band performing.
Leather Jackets and Skinny Jeans are associated with rock bands due to their ‘edgy’ attitude

‘Girls’ is a single off the band’s self-entitled debut album.
Prior to their debut album, the band’s music videos consisted
of monochrome colours- black and white- leading to many
believing they were conforming to their record company’s
wishes. As a result, this video- as well as ‘Sex’ which was
the single before- included colour. The video for ‘Girls’ is a
tongue-in-cheek replication of these reviews whereby the
plot consists of the band not wanting to make a video.
CAMERA SHOTS
This music video uses quick cut editing which are positioned
in time with the music. As a result, the camera changes
angle, shot or movement on the beat. A majority of the shots
used conform to ‘star image’ whereby the shots used
concentrate on the ‘talent’ of the members such as their
instruments. As a result, the faces of Adam, Ross and
George are rarely seen.
The plot of the video also sees females performing as a
band as well. To integrate this into the video and maintain
fluency, the video utilizes ‘jump cut’ shots whereby the same
content in the video is seen but a different gender.
CAMERA MOVEMENTS
Throughout this video, the camera often
maintains to a stationary position. This allows
the audience to concentrate and focus more
easily on what is on the screen (the band).
IMAGE
Members of the band are wearing black and
white clothing such as skinny jeans, T-Shirts and
leather jackets. These items conform to the rock
genre, and therefore supports the band’s genre.
Style is not just part of an artists’ image; so is
their body language. The language used by the
members in ‘Girls’ supports its plot which about
the band not wanting to perform a video. As a
result, the band are seen looking annoyed as
they are being labelled as ‘pop’ when they are in
fact ‘rock.’
LOCATION
The video is filmed primarily behind a white
background where both the band and the
women perform at. In addition, the video often
cuts to a ‘comic-like’ setting with deck chairs
and a BBQ. This location is full of colour and
therefore reinforces the plot of the video
which is to illustrate how the band are not
‘pop’ but a ‘rock’ band.
FORMATION
Throughout the video, the band are
positioned in a typical band formation. The
band are set up as they would do in an actual
concert of theirs. This attracts their audience
because they will be able to recognise the
‘rock band’ via the formation.
‘Chocolate’ is the third song on their self-entitled
debut album. The video sees the band driving a 1975
Ford Consul car around London (Limehouse area in
particular); the band go past places such as Canary
Wharf, the Limehouse Link as well as Aspen.
CAMERA SHOTS
A range of camera shots and angles are used such
as a wide shot on the bonnet of the car, close-ups of
the band within the car and close shots of lead singer
Matt walking through the London district.
CAMERA MOVEMENTS
As the video is shot at night the lighting in the video is
poor. To engage the audience more because of this,
the camera is constantly moving in order to maintain
the eyes of the audience as the screen is always
moving.
IMAGE
As the video is filmed at night, it is difficult to see what the band are actually wearing.
However, the band are conforming to the rock genre they fit into by sporting black and
white clothing like leather jackets which will attract an audience due to the stereotype.
LOCATION
‘Chocolate’ is filmed on the streets of Limehouse in London. The camera focuses either
on the band in the car or walking down alleyways and paths. The location suits the
meaning of the song as it is about ‘weed’ which one would smoke in down alleyways.
FORMATION
As the band are filmed within a car it is difficult to maintain their typical formation like they
would perform in. However, lead singer Matt is positioned in the front passenger seat as
he gains the most attention from fans. Being in this position, means that he will be in shot
of the camera the most. As a result, the audience are easily able to recognise the band
via his face as he is essentially the ‘face’ of The 1975.
