Our chosen Genre

• We have chosen the genre of Thriller as it is one of the easiest genres to portray under the limited budget and time scale we have

• The thriller Genres aim is to “Thrill” the audience; they usually achieve this by having a complex story line that involves suspense and moments of tension. Conventions that audiences expect to see are violence and a dark, derelict location

• Thriller is a rather popular genre for hybrids, the most popular are crime, horror, mystery and drama. Some examples of this are:

• Drama/thriller- The Talented Mr Ripley• Crime/thriller- Taken• Horror/thriller- The Silence of the lambs• Mystery/thriller- The Prestige

Thriller genre

• A thriller usually consists of a battle between a protagonist and an antagonist when there is a disruption in the equilibrium

• The story then typically shows a chain of bad events which builds tension and suspense

• After research into this genre we decided on the sub-genre of a crime thriller

Target audience

• When researching into the crime thriller genre we decided on a primary target audience of young males between the ages of 15-25

• Fans of this sub-genre are usually males due to their stereotypical interest in the elements of crime, action and suspense

• The secondary target audience would be young adults between the ages of 15 and 30

Narrative

• Our aim is to show a complex plot, without making it confusing. As well as being interesting, and tension building. To achieve this our narrative will show two characters, in different locations, this will be a dual narrative. One character will be a stereotypical teenage girl around 17-20 and she will be leaving her house and walking through a village. The second character will be “the criminal” and will be following the girl through the village, after leaving a dark room,riddled with maps and pictures, that shows this crime has been thought out.The two narratives will meet when she get’s abducted in a dark area.

Location

• The room in which the crime is planned will use low key lighting to immediately set the tense atmosphere

• The outside shots will be filmed in a local area such as Middleton Cheney or Chacombe

Sound

• As most thriller films have, there will be non-diegetic incidental music that will be played to help create tension and suspense, the pace of the music will increase as the criminal lurks closer to the victim.

• As this will be predominately in POV shot, there will be non-diegetic breathing, and the sound of a heart beat to create tension further.

• There will also be ambient diegetic sound from the street.

Credits

• Our opening credits will appear over the top of our scenes, and when the film fades to black at the end the film name will appear last

• We will use typography similar to those used in these thriller films, the texts are distorted and sharp which will help the audience easily recognise the film as a thriller

• We will use red text for the film name as it has connotations of danger which helps it to stand out to the viewer

Camera shots

• We will use POV (point of view) shots when showing the antagonist side of the narrative

• Match on action shots will also be used to link the two storylines together at the end of the opening which will build tension

• Close ups will be used to show the emotion on the girls face and to emphasise certain props such as the time on a watch

• Panning out shots will be used when revealing the antagonists plan of his crime which will help to build the suspense

Editing

• The pace of the cuts, and lengths of shot will change throughout as the narrative shifts. Darker filters will be used to emphasis dark atmosphere. Montage editing will also be used to create tension and suspense.

• The films title will fade from black and appear slowly on the screen, fitting in with the style of the film.

Mise en scene

• The antagonist will be wearing all black in order to keep his identity hidden, this all black costume also has connotations of a criminal image

• The young girl will be wearing typical modern teenage girl clothes which will help the audience to easily recognise her character
