THE BOOK DAYIs a yearly event on 23rd April,
organized by UNESCO to promote
reading, publishing and copyright.
In the United Kingdom, the day is
instead recognized on the first
Thursday in March, and also the
National Saint's Day of England,
St George's Day. In Spain, St.
George’s Day the boys give a rose
to the girls.
CHOISE OF DATE
The connection between 23rd April and books was:
● Made in 1923 by booksellers in Spain as a way to
honor the author Miguel de Cervantes who buried on
that day.
● In 1995, UNESCO decided that the World Book and
Copyright Day would be celebrated on this date the
date is also the anniversary of the birth and death of
William Shakespeare.
MIGUEL DE CERVANTES
He was born on 29th September of 1547 in Alcalá de
Henares and he died on 22 April 1616. He was a
Spanish novelist, poet, and playwright. He was
dubbed El Príncipe de los Ingenios ("The Prince of
Wits").
The most famous of his novels is Don Quixote, it’s a
classic of Western literature, the first part of this
novel was published on 1605 in Madrid (Spain) and in
1613 he published the second part.

WILLIAM SHAKESPEAREWilliam Shakespeare (1564-1616) was born
in Stratford on Avon, in England. The
young William studied in the local school
but he had to leave it because they didn’t
have enough money to pay it.
William got married in 28th November of
1582 with Anne Hathaway. Around 1590,
Shakespeare went to London and started
to compose several poems and dramas,
like Venus and Adonis.
But it wasn’t until 1600 when he composed
the most remarkable compositions of his
carrier, including the famous drama
“Hamlet” and “Macbeth”. In 1609, he wrote
the 154 famous “Sonnets”, which were short
poems about love. In total, he wrote 37
theater operas. He died in his hometown in
1616 and was buried in the Church of the
Holy Trinity. He has been the most important
writer in the English history and Macbeth.
