ERICA’S CASE
• Erica is seeing a counselor, Helena
• Body Image
• Eating Disorders
• Erica encounters her counselor
• At a local café
• Helena is with a friend
• They chat briefly
• Helena’s friend asks how she knows Erica
INTERVENTION
• Helena must steer clear of introducing Erica as her client
• Repect confidentiality
• Helena can treat Erica for any issues
• Should discuss in advance the possibility of encountering one another outside of the office
CONFIDENTIALITY
• If Erica had began discussing her sessions
• Helena should change the conversation to something more general
• Prevent any disclosure outside the office by
• Discussing with Erica that they are not allowed to discuss the sessions outside of the office
• Let Erica know that whatever is said in the office should not be mentioned outside of that confidentiality
ETHICAL BEHAVIOR
• Helena must act friendly towards Erica in order to avoid any negative situations
• Professionalism
• Prevents any anger
• Helena must still act professional in a public setting
• Must not let others know that Erica is a client
