In his childhood he suffered from ill health. After a long decline in health, he died of heart disease.

His principal areas of work as an artist were threefold: as a draughtsman employed to illustrate birds and animals; making coloured drawings during his journeys.

As an author, Lear is principally known for his popular nonsense works, rather than as a travel writer.

These show a great ability to use with relish the sound of real and invented English words. The poem ‘The Duck and the Kangaroo’ is a poem with a touch of light humour.

The Duck and the Kangaroo [Poem]

- Edward Lear

Page 9: The duck and the kangaroo

Said the Duck to the Kangaroo, “Good gracious! How you hop!

Page 10: The duck and the kangaroo

Over the fields and the water too, As if you never would stop!

Page 11: The duck and the kangaroo

My life is a bore in this nasty pond, And I long to go out in the world beyond!

Page 12: The duck and the kangaroo

I wish I could hop like you!” Said the Duck to the Kangaroo.

Page 13: The duck and the kangaroo

“Please give me a ride on your back!” Said the Duck to the Kangaroo.

Please give me a ride!

I am ready

Page 14: The duck and the kangaroo

“I would sit quite still, and say nothing but ‘QUACK’,

The whole of the long day through!

Page 15: The duck and the kangaroo

And we’d go to the Dee and the Jelly Bo Lee, Over the land, and over the sea;

Page 16: The duck and the kangaroo

Please take me a ride! O do!” Said the Duck to the Kangaroo.

Page 17: The duck and the kangaroo

Said the Kangaroo to the Duck, “This requires some little reflection;

Page 18: The duck and the kangaroo

Perhaps on the whole it might bring me LUCK,

And there seems but one objection,

Page 19: The duck and the kangaroo

And there seems but one objection, Which is, if you’ll let me speak so bold,

Page 20: The duck and the kangaroo

Your feet are unpleasantly wet and cold, And would probably give me the roo-

Matiz!” said the Kangaroo.

Page 21: The duck and the kangaroo

Said the Duck, “As I sat on the rocks, I have thought over that completely.

Page 22: The duck and the kangaroo

And I bought four pairs of worsted socks Which fit my web feet neatly.

Page 23: The duck and the kangaroo

And to keep out the cold I’ve bought a cloak, And everyday a cigar I’ll smoke,

Page 24: The duck and the kangaroo

All to follow my own dear true Love of a Kangaroo!”

Page 25: The duck and the kangaroo

Said the Kangaroo, “I’m ready! All in the moonlight pale;

Page 26: The duck and the kangaroo

But to balance me well, dear Duck, sit steady! And quite at the end of my tail!”

Page 27: The duck and the kangaroo

So away they went with a hop and a bound, And they hopped the whole world three times

round;

Page 28: The duck and the kangaroo

And who so happy – O who, As the Duck and the Kangaroo?
