• Alliance between France and Russia to keep Germany in check.

• Plan by Germany to attack France through Belgium (an official neutral country).

• Alliance between France, Russia, and Britain.

Archduke Franz Ferdinand of Austria-Hungary

• Killed by Gavrilo Princip, a Serbian nationalist, while visiting Sarajevo, Bosnia. His assassination resulted in World War I.

Central Powers

• Alliance between Germany, Austria-Hungary, and the Ottoman Empire against the Triple Entente.

The Allies

• Japan, the Triple Entente, Italy, and more than 40 countries that were colonies of those imperial powers against the Central Powers.

Isolationism

• Policy adopted by the United States declaring neutrality during World War I, preferring to focus on its own internal affairs.

Zimmermann Telegram

• A secret message sent between German diplomats suggesting that Mexico might want to join forces with Germany and regain territory it lost to the United States in the Mexican-American War of 1846 that was intercepted by the United States and caused them to join the Allies in World War I.

The Great War

• Another name for World War I.

Treaty of Versailles

• Brought an official end to World War I. This treaty required Germany to pay war reparations, release territory, and downsize its military. Also divided Austria Hungary into separate nations, and created other nations such as Czechoslovakia.

President Wilson's Fourteen Points

• Focused on establishing future peace and a workable balance of power, and creating the League of Nations.
