Scales are usedto measure the

mass of different items.

We can use a measuring cylinder to measure

amounts of liquid.

Rulers and tape measures are used to measure length.We also use rulers to draw straight lines.

Clocks and stopwatches areused to tell and measure the time.

An abacus hassets of 10 beads on rods.

It is used for countingand other calculations.

Square NumbersWhen a number has been multiplied by itself,

we say that the answer is a square number.Can you see why they are called square?

The first ten square numbers are1, 4, 9, 16, 25, 36, 49, 64, 81 and 100.

We can write four squared as 4 x 4 or 42.

2 x 2 = 4

3 x 3 = 9

4 x 4 = 16

5 x 5 = 25

A square root is the opposite ofa square number.

If 4 x 4 = 16, the square root of 16 is 4. We use the square root sign (√)

to show this, so √16 = 4

PolygonsA polygon is a shape with straight sides.

If all of the sides are the same length, the shape is regular.If they are not the same length, it is irregular.

surfaces.A vertex is another word for corner. The

plural is vertices.

Edges are where the two faces meet.

TemperatureTemperature is a measure of how hot or cold something is. We measure temperature using a thermometer.

We usually measure temperature in ºC(degrees Celsius) but it can also be measuredin ºF (degrees Fahrenheit).

Did you know?

Water freezes at 0ºC and it boils at 100ºC.
