Debra Ann Todd

I have always hated and loved my name. My father

says my entire name is after his favorite niece, but my mom

says my first name is my dad’s niece and my middle name

is after my Antie Anne May. Who took care of my mother

while she was pregnant with me. I hated my first and my

middle names because it is so Southern, Debra Ann is the

name for a old women from the south, not a young girl

growing up in Columbus, Ohio. Now my last name is a

different story, I have always liked it, because I was always

in line with my best friend Melinda Rose. The only time

that I did not like it was first grade. Where they turned it

into toad instead of Todd, but after awhile that grew old and

they stopped calling me toad.

My last name is a bit of a mystery. My father’s

father came from Haiti and when he got here he had to

choose a last name because he did not have one. So, he

choose Todd. No one really knows why he choose that

name, I always thought it was because it was easy to spell.

My grandfather could neither read or write.

The name Debra can be found in all kinds of readings

and text. The formal meaning of Debra is worker bee.

Debra is the contraction or shorting of the Hebrew name

Deborah. Ann is also Hebrew from Anna meaning

gracious. My last name Todd is a Scottish nickname

meaning a sly fox or someone with red hair.

From the years 1970-1980 the name Debra was

ranked at 105 in baby names. The best year for the name

Ann was 1930 it was ranked 34th for that year. My last

name Todd was popular surname in the south during the

1800’s. When a lot of Scottish people settled in the south

during slavery.
