FOREWORD KARINA ANDERSENFounder of THE SMILING ONE FOUNDATION

“Do not go where the path may lead,

go instead where there is no path and leave a trail”

As I journey with our Change Agents through their Circles of Change (COC) I wake more and more up

to this inspiring quote by Ralph Waldo Emerson. When each of us live into our Golden Thread and follow its

calling, Magic takes place! Each project that we have been so lucky to witness and gently guide in our Change

Agent work this year inspires to move beyond what we think we know and open ourselves to the grand

adventure! I am deeply grateful for a year that has emptied me and opened me further. Only when we can be

fully present with ‘the other’ can we deeply honour their journey and its unfolding. Here at SmilingOne

we are curious about the puzzle piece that each of our Students are in our greater puzzle - their unique

contribution. We walk hand in hand, we spin the COC Engine inwardly and outwardly, we shape and co-

create inspiring projects that heal and inspire youth, families and communities.

Our annual report is a testimony of how each Change Agent leaves a trail

as they are drawn by the inner pull towards their purpose - embracing

the share they own in the well-being of our Society!

FOREWORD FRANKLIN ESAU CHAIR PERSON CHANGE AGENT COMMITTEE

The past annum has been tremendous in my learning as a Change Agent and Chair of the SmilingOne Change

Agent Committee. One of the key areas for me has been our support of other ‘Change Agents in the Making’

released on parole and reintegrating back into society. 

The Parolee Support Portfolio has allowed us to reach new heights as we have journeyed alongside ‘Change

Agent in the Making’ on the path of change, going back to their respective communities via the Circle Of

Change. It has inspired us in the planning of our Change Agent Resource Centre which will house parolees

and be an important ingredient in ensuring successful reintegration. The centre is a place to be active in

developing themselves and their community in leadership and education. 

One example is a project initiated by ‘Change Agent in the Making’ Monwabisi Mbetane who hosts ballroom

dancing classes in the Langa community as part of his Caring Practice. It has been amazing to experience how

the community has embraced the initiative of the Change Agent giving back to his community. He started his

ballroom dancing classes for the kids of the community.  The demand grew and the adults are now requesting

classes. We welcome projects like these wholeheartedly. It speaks volumes about the potential that is being

unlocked and how reintegration has value to the community. 

These have been some of my highlights of the year. Many projects and events have happened through the

year and graced the SmilingOne Calendar.

1. We facilitate CIRCLES OF CHANGE (COC) in highly challenged South African communities establishing a foundation for development with our personal values-based leadership

program: THE RESPONSIBLE INDIVIDUAL (TRI).

2. We educate CHANGE AGENTS who facilitate dynamic COC processes within their communities which include: prisons, families, schools, youth at risk, businesses and organisations – in society at large.

3. Our CHANGE AGENTS are ROLE MODELS who also assist the important phase of Re-Integration, reducing the recidivism rate by helping parolees to build the bridge back into society, back home into their families and communities.

4. We are an EMPOWERMENT ARM for our beneficiaries, their families and communities. We do not do it for them. We do it with them. ”Give a man a fish and you feed him for a day; teach a man to fish and you feed him for a lifetime.” The COC empowers the journey of each student towards sustainable livelihood, operating in an Abundant Exchange.

OUR PORTFOLIOSRE-INTEGRATION PRIOR RELEASE

We have been active in 3 Western Cape Prison with more than 60 TRI students activated in Circles of

Change (COC). In each of the prisons: Malmesbury Medium Centre for Men, Worcester Medium Centre for Men

and Helderstroom Medium Centre for Men we have facilitator teams operating internally to shift the criminal

environment through their own role model behaviour. These are our Change Agents in the making. They are Peer

Friends who gently guide their fellow inmates on the path of change using our personal values-based leadership

program The Responsible Individual. We have invested in the educational path of 10 Change Agents in

the Making inside prison. This means frequent coach educational sessions with Karina and supervision of

guidance processes. We do quality, not quantity!

Objective 2015/16: We continue to deeply honour our Service Agreement with the DCS and expand

naturally to more Correctional Centres in the Western Cape, activating re-integrated Change Agents as part of

their COC3 Resource Practice for sustainable livelihoods. We journey with 80 TRI Students and continue

education of our 10 + 4 new Change Agents in the making.

THIS IS HOW WE JOURNEY AT SMILING ONE BY BRADLEY HESS. CHANGE AGENT & TRI FACILITATOR

Today our Circle of Sharing was filled with new forces, curious minds and beautiful smiles. Presence was filled with a new aroma and vibrant energy. Ilse gently introduced “A Moment of Silence” bringing as us all together in breath into the present moment. Our busy minds were cut off from the past, the future and the noisy circumstances.

Ilse and I took the opportunity to introduce ourselves. We shared our purpose and our inspiration as Peer Friends and shared about our self-discovery and what responsibility meant to us. Keenan Petersen whom I had 4 sessions with already shared about what attracted him to the TRI sessions. Soon the circle was filled with smiles and comfort. Also Franklin Esau shared a wonderful story about his life, his challenges as a parolee, the importance of choice and the gifts of responsibility. Very tendering was the part of the little boy within Franklin, which he shared about. Franklin was then asked to present a little something of his talent. And with a smile he did a two minute RAP. The new arrivals were filled with joy. As the harmonic space was now established I asked them to introduce themselves:

- I came here to learn as SmilingOne is something new to me

- I did a lot of programs before, I was released on Parole various times, been in and out of prison. I’m almost 40 I don’t know what makes me act so irresponsibly. I want to change, maybe this programme can help me Change?

- I am intelligent and confident, I have tertiary education, I used to assist and give others advice, I share a double identity. I help others but I fail to help myself, there is something holding me back. I am a positive but need peace.

- I am filled with fear, I phoned my father, I love him. I was released on Parole and something happened between me and my father and I’m back. I am here today to look at new ways of discovering my source of happiness.

Ilse, Franklin and I then had our facilitator team session. We looked at the challenges we faced recently and how purposeful it was. We also shared our learning received from the session. We Looked at what qualities make our individual guidance strong, and what weaknesses within ourselves make our guidance difficult. Most important we shared our different concepts of guidance and how we can use each other’s tools, to gain more learning and create effective guidance for others and mainly ourselves.

A SMILING ONE JOURNEYBY ILSE VAN NIEKERK

I have firsthand experience of people changing – myself and also the people behind bars. I realise that we are all so similar and little puzzle pieces in Life’s big puzzle. We learn from each other and shape each other during the storms and also the sunny periods of life. I relate to the methodology used by SmilingOne, which is completely non-directional, non-judgmental and merely facilitates growth.

I am currently training as a coach with SmilingOne. I started going to Malmesbury prison at the end of 2012, first observing and now facilitating my own groups.

But it is of no use to share what I have learnt at SmilingOne if I do not walk my talk in my own life. Since I have incorporated what I have learnt at SmilingOne, I am better able to:

• take responsibility for my life, my decisions, my actions and my feelings;• embrace my own feelings, release my pain, understand my emotions and progress through them;• understand my reactions and to choose whether it serves me in my life;• find opportunity and purpose in challenge;• not point a finger when people push my buttons - it is more about myself than about the person pushing

my buttons - I now realise that it is my duty to go back to my wounds and heal them. I am still trying. This is a difficult one. It is just so much easier to shoot the messenger than to take responsibility;

• find and mold my own mission, values and roles in life – and then live fully;• take appropriate risks and try out new experiences;• question old beliefs and patterns.

I can use this every single day of my life. I know that I still have a long way to go, but each day I try to live closer to these principles. It has helped immensely to develop and grow my inner strength and equilibrium.

In a nutshell, it compelled me to take responsibility for those things, which I ought to be responsible for. As a facilitator, I am able to walk the exact same journey with inmates and I see change in action – not just words, but change at the core of being.

OUR PORTFOLIOSRE-INTEGRATION POST RELEASE - PAROLEE SUPPORT

We are a support network for our TRI Students who are re-integrating back into Society. Every Student can

tap into Parolee Support and our Family Support. We offer weekly TRI sessions for continuous personal values-

based leadership development and full COC activation with a Change Agent who has already successfully

reintegrated and who is fully active in his own COC. Each Student is encouraged to start their own Caring Project

within their community. We inspire Entrepreneurship.

We have welcomed home 2 of our highly committed TRI Students and journeyed with 8 Parolees in

2014/15. This has contributed towards giving birth to CMD Music Project and the Ballroom Dancing

Project involving Youth-at-Risk in both Elsies River and Langa Communities.

OBJECTIVE 2015/16: we continue to be deeply committed to our Parolee Support and start our SmilingOne

Change Agent Resource Centre where we both house parolees and further develop and unlock their potential for

successful re-integration. We work with 30 parolees (of which 20 are juveniles) and their families.

A SMILING ONE JOURNEYBY VAUGHAN MCGEE (TRI Student & Ex Parolee)

I am a Resource today: Outsource Digital Group Pty Ltd. I started without a Salary and was a reseller for the company 3 years ago. I am now the Sales Director, a partner in the business and a Director.

Recent successes: We have just closed a 15 Million Rand deal a week ago, this will be my biggest copier deal to date in one deal. In my first year in the Nelspruit offices, a branch they were about to close, I managed to turn it around and become branch of the year in the company’s national foot print with branches country wide! In my second year I was invited to Toshiba South Africa’s head office to give a speech to the top 10

dealers out of 541 branches as I managed to win the award for most machines moved in the year in the entire country. We are now only in the beginning of the 3rd year but are already on target to win dealer of the year again. The branch has grown in the last 2 years by 1200 percent.

I on a personal note won Pit bull of the year award and second place in the group for sales. In my second year I won number 1 place and top salesperson in the group. I have also won an award from Toshiba South Africa for more machines sold than any other salesperson in the entire country that sells Toshiba copiers out of 541 companies that resell the Toshiba copiers. I was the only partner to be given my shares as the other partners paid half a million for their shares. Mine were called blood, sweat and tears shares.

Recent challenges and how I approach a challenge today: Biggest challenges that I face on a daily basis is that of staffing related issues and stress. One of our biggest successes as a branch is that we don’t scream and shout and throw things around the office as do most of our rival companies. We find that happy staff are more successful and try harder. This attitude I would like to believe was imparted to me by the Smiling One Foundation and Karin Andersen. We find that treating people with love and respect and dignity brings out the best qualities in them and allows them the platform to really shine and excel. Love is the basis of any and all understanding and without that element most if not all organisation and even homes don’t really stand a chance of achieving great heights and success stories.

What stands out in my SmilingOne Journey?: I was met by love and given and shown love when most were quick to criticise and be grade me. The love that I was given even as a criminal and offender at that stage in my life allowed me to start to heal and feel needed and a part of something. That love and compassion carried me in my life through the worst possible situations and kept me strong and focused. I was able to of that small amount of love start to heal and feel good about myself again after years of being down trodden. I have carried that through the years and allowed its simplicity but complexity to filter through into my business. We have found that love can heal, change, shape and mould any individual and empower them to the point giving them the courage and strength to strive and push for the best and achieve the impossible. Love can grow and change the world. It has done so for me. Why I recommend SmilingOne & TRI to others? SmilingOne is a truly fantastic organisation that actually get their hands dirty so to speak. They don’t shout from a podium or preach to the masses about change, but rather go into the most undesirable places that most people try not to ever even think about. The SmilingOne Foundation doesn’t just talk about change, but rather lives the change through their own actions and visible intensions on a grass roots level. I actually owe my life literally to Karina Andersen and SmilingOne as they stepped in when my life was really in jeopardy, placed themselves in harms way to save a life, my life…. SmilingOne deserves to be supported aided and assisted for tackling issues that no one has ever even wanted to address, but everyone wishes they weren’t there. I commend SmilingOne for their hard blood, sweat and tears efforts and there unwavering love and support. I am alive today, run a successful business and live a beautiful life only due to the efforts of The Smiling One Foundation. Thank you Karina Andersen and the Smiling One Foundation for saving a wretch like me. My encouragement to others: Love your neighbour and your enemy as you would have the world love you. Every single human has a heart, feels pain, suffering and hardship, and everyone thrives on love. Love will conquer all, and I am a prime example of how change can come from love.

WE ALL OWN A SHARE IN THE WELL-BEING OF OUR SOCIETY

8 years ago the vision of a SmilingOne Learning Village found us and it became one of SmilingOne's

big Ships of intentions. Little did we know what this really meant. Today we are shown as the vision

comes alive and shapes before our eyes through the incredible work and expansion of our SmilingOne

Foundation. We realise we simply cannot dream as big as it can get. A dream fuelled by pure loving

intention has unlimited potential. In honouring of the journey and its unfolding we take action and

this year open our first Change Agent Resource Centre with a SKY VILLAGE Theme.

Every single ingredient within this centre is inspired by the unlocking of potential of a Change Agent.

Each one contributes a valuable Puzzle Piece. Our Resource Centre is geared for sustainability. Not

only do we inspire green and healthy living we also work towards that each ingredient in the centre

both offers COC3 skills development and is income generating. An example is SKY Cafe’ which will

serve wholesome food to our parolees who live at the centre. SKY Cafe’ is also a place to learn cooking

skills and expand on the ‘healthy living’ toolbox. It is healthy individuals that builds a healthy and

dynamic society. And it doesn’t stop here. SKY Cafe’ offers a deliciously healthy menu to the public and

generates an income that can sustain the SKY Cafe’ project. We inspire Entrepreneurship!

We are excited to share the experience of our Change Agent Resource Centre with you and to grow

with the process as it continues to teach us.

YOUTH DEVELOPMENT: CMD MUSIC PROJECTBY CHANGE AGENT FRANKLIN ESAU

CMD became a Change Agent COC Caring Project guided by Franklin working with three Youth-at-Risk in the Elsies River Community: Latoya, Robyn and Stanford.

CMD recorded its first song called ‘CHUCKS’ and its second song called ‘PEACE’.

CMD did a photoshoot to add to the CMD portfolio.

TRI was introduced to CMD - Youth-at-Risk in Circles of Sharing.

CMD shoots the first music video ever. Epic!

BALLROOM DANCING BY CHANGE AGENT IN THE MAKING

MONWABISI MBETANE

Monwabisi has trained with SmilingOne since 2013 in

Malmesbury Prison. He re-integrated in 2014 and has

attended his weekly parolee support, deepening his TRI

Practice .

He has shaped a very special Caring Project where he ‘pays

it forward’ through facilitating Ballroom Dancing classes

twice a week in his Langa Community. He has brought joy,

movement and shared purpose into the lives of the kids.

Many adults in the community have shown interest to join

the Ballroom Classes as well.

Monwabisi’s objective is to continue to build his business,

to deepen his skills as an Entrepreneur, study Accounting,

continue to enrich the community with Ballroom Dancing

and to contribute to our upcoming SmilingOne Change

Agent Resource Centre.

COMMUNITY & YOUTH DEVELOPMENT: CAR PROJECT BY CHANGE AGENT MALCOLM BOOYSEN

My project was quiet for a while. I saw the car every day when I passed the house where it was parked. I saw the

grass grow around it. I felt sorry for it. The project speaks about a side of me that gives up. It is an old known

story inside of me that I keep buying. The project has invited me to meet ‘the little guy in me’’, not to give up and

experience that I can do it. I have been a guide to so many people with my story. So much has come my way

since I started this project. I have been part of a documentary for SmilingOne and also did a spinning clip. I have

had two radio interviews and have one coming up soon with a DJ that is also into cars. All of these things I have

attracted. I am climbing my ladder and taking full advantage of all the open doors. I am finishing the car and I

aim to work full-time for SmilingOne.“Prev

We have been supporting two incredible women who

have taken community and youth empowerment to a whole

new level. They run the IVY Nyovane Educare Centre in Nyanga East and have been in partnership with

SmilingOne since 2010. After the renovations in 2014

sponsored by GM UteForce & GM ChildLife Ma Esther

(founder) and Vuyiswa (principal) have utilised the beautiful

new facilities to deepen their focus on early childhood

development (ECD). They have more than 100 children

daily at the centre and with the help from three Youth

Community Builders they also offer Saturday

workshops. More than 200 children in the community

benefit from the love, care and education of Ivy

Nyovane. Ma Esther and Vuyiswa have furthermore

attended their weekly Montessori educational

training and graduated in October 2014. Our

Objective is to continue to walk hand in hand to support

this wonderful project!

We have had the special privilege of supporting 3 amazing women in full COC

Activation with external Bursaries. Ma Esther and Vuyiswa from the ECD

Project Ivy Nyovane attended weekly Montessori training and graduated in October

2014. Vuyiswa has taken this up a notch and moved into the next level. 2015 is a

year of educational expansion for her. Bukiwe went to school daily and finalised

her first year at College of Cape Town in Gugulethu end of 2014. Due to her excellent

results she has been able to get a Bursary via the College in 2015. We are very proud

of these women who are an inspiration to their communities.

How I inspire other students: through dedication, quality in all I do, time, motivation, listening and interacting, giving advice and exchanging ideas, willingness, my writing and lastly I give presence.

My journey as a SRC Nominee: The school opened and after just few weeks we were told as students that there had to be new SRC’s elected. My Student Supporter approached me regarding becoming one of the SRC’s for 2015. We had a session about it. She knew I wasn’t interested. It was because of last years SRC’s. They were invisible on campus. They didn't contribute in our school, only violence and that was not one of my values. To my surprise a friend of mine decided to nominate me so I could be one of the people who would stand up for the students and become an SRC.

I did my manifesto in the hall full of students. I took third position in votes out of 9 contestants and those results made me feel welcomed on the journey I was to embark on. Just right after the selection as a SRC’s we went to Grabouw to attend a Back to Basic camp where we were going to be joined by other SRC’s from other campuses of College of Cape Town. The camp was amazing. The camp taught me that there will be times in life you will want to give up and walk away because it seems scary to move forward; however do not be easily shaken, remain strong and continue no matter how scary or challenging it is. Just keep on walking.

My Journey as a SRC Vice Chairperson: I was soon promoted to be the vice Chair Person because of my capabilities and how I carry myself. At first I was clueless what this meant but I have learnt. My duties and powers include preparing the agenda for the meeting with the secretary; ensure that the members have been notified of the meeting; open up the meeting; ask the secretary to read the minutes of the previous meeting and also keep control of the discussions and bring to order if the members are getting unruly or are wasting time… Just to mention a few of my duties. And I make the final decision. So far I have worked with other SRC’s looking at the complaints of the students and also their needs. One outstanding experience so far: there was this student that almost missed the due date of the submission of his bursary forms. I took him straight to the bursary office to make sure he was receiving good assistance. They helped him and the following day he came to me with a smile, telling me everything had been sorted out. This was a cherry on top for me to see that I am contributing positively in the students’ lives. The journey continues with a smile on my face.

My Journey as a Writer: 'I am living my dream as a writer’. Yes I have always been one but I so wanted to get my writing skills out there as someone who writes for the public to educate and inspire. When a Newsletter was started at our Campus there was no way I was gonna let this pass me. Last month our first issue was only 4pages made of A5 papers. I am proud to say today it came out and we managed to do 12 pages made of A4 papers! The minute I got the issue I was the happiest in the world because I am part of the youth that is making history at College of Cape Town, part of the youth that has shown courage, determination and faith in making it all happen. My first issue about 'Depression' touched lives. Students came to me about what they were facing. Endurance is what keeps me going!

My Objective is to continue my educational path, continue to write and continue to inspire the students (700+) on campus. SmilingOne walks next to me all the way.

DOCUMENTARY BY ROX DALTON

Last year as part of my Masters Degree in Documentary Arts at the University of Cape Town, I made a short film that led me into prisons. This year we were tasked with creating a much longer format documentary.

An aspect I didn’t explore in the short film was what happened to an inmate who according to the system in place was classified as ‘successfully rehabilitated’ and was released back into society. This led me to the SmilingOne Foundation and two unique individuals who are SmilingOne Change Agents, Malcolm and Franklin. I met them together with the founder of the organisation Karina Andersen. Our first meeting took place in front of the fire of Karina’s lounge where we discussed everything from rehabilitation to filmmaking. I knew quite soon into our conversation that I would love to incorporate these two fascinating people in my documentary. By focusing on their lives and programmes they are involved in as part of their Circles of Change (COC), a concept carried by SmilingOne Change Agents, I hope to explore the power of rehabilitation and confront the judgments we as a society often place on anyone with a criminal record.

Franklin introduced us to Elsies hip hop, ballroom dancing in Langa and a unique creche in Nyanga that is about to step out from the financial assistance SmilingOne has provided and begin to generate their own income using the tools they have learned thus far. Along with Franklin’s musical ability he is always a source of inspiration and his positivity is contagious. He shares his life with a sense of honesty and authenticity that creates a space for those he interacts with to do the same. He always has time to laugh and enjoy the company he is with which means he is a constant reminder that life should be a celebration.

Through Malcolm we met Ocean View and the group he runs that fixes old beetles. Malcolm comes alive when he talks about cars and his passion clearly inspires the group he works with. Malcolm is responsible for inspiring one of the key themes of the documentary which is “leaving your mark”. When he was explaining the ‘spinning culture’ in Ocean View and how spinning or drifting can be a physical way of leaving your mark on a place, I realised that SmilingOne Change Agents such as Malcolm and Franklin are leaving their mark on the communities they engage with. Their presence uplifts and inspires positive change and creates a space for those around them to learn from them. My only hope is that this documentary can capture a small part of their journey and inspire others to leave their mark in ways that can uplift those around them. Thank you Malcolm, Franklin and Karina for allowing us a chance to follow your journey over the next months.

We use our high success rate in Crime Diversion to

fuel our Crime Prevention Strategy which has a

lasting impact on Youth-at-Risk. Our portfolios
