The Theory of Everything A bit about the film- The Theory of Everything is a British film that was released in 2014. It was adapted from the Anthony McCarten memoir ‘Travelling to Infinity: My Life with Stephen’ by Jane Wild Hawking. The memoir is about her relationship with her ex- husband, his success in physics and his diagnosis with Motor Neuron Disease. These are all sections that are featured and explained within the film. When the film opened worldwide, it received a positive reception, which lead to a number of different accolades within different film festivals and award shows. Awards season- There was a large range of awards that the film was successful in being nominated for and for some nominations fortunately winning them. The award range nominations include the Academy Award for Best Actor, four Golden Globe awards (best actor - motion picture drama and best original score), three Screen Actors Guild Awards and ten British Academy Film Awards. The awards that the film collected were: Eddie Redmayne (who played Stephen Hawking) won the Academy award for Best Actor. The plot-“The Theory of Everything” is the film adaptation about the story of one of the most celebrated physicist of our time, Mr Stephen Hawking. It includes how the arts student Jane Wild fell in love with him whist in the midst of studying at Cambridge in the 1960s. At age 21 Stephen, was a bright and shiftless Cosmology student, who wad unexpectedly given the shocking and unexpected news that he had only two years to live. Following his diagnosis of the fatal illness Motor Neuron Disease. He became galvanized, but with the love he received from Jane managed to go on t be called the successor to Einstein. Hawking became both Husband and Father to their three children. There are many different highlights as well as challenges throughout their relationship as the fault lines were exposed and tested which lead to both of their lives been dramatically altered.

Cast-The main cast of the film includes:Stephen Hawking played by Eddie Redmayne, Jane Hawking played by Felicity Jones. Brian Stephen’s best friend and room mate was played by Harry Lloyd, Charlie Cox as Jonathan Jones, Jane’s second husband. Emily Watson as Beryl Wilde -Jane’s mother, Simon McBurney as Frank Hawking – Stephen’s Father. David Thewlis as Dennis Sciama, Maxine Peake as Elaine Mason Stephen’s second wife.

Eddie Redmayne who is now known as an Oscar winning actor due to this film has previously modelled for Burberry along with Cara Delevingne. He has also done some theatrical work including King Richard II in Richard II, Red on Broadway and Viola in Twelfth night. He has also done some television and film work, including Les Misérable role of Marius Pontmercy. Some of his other successful work includes The Danish Girl.

Felicity Jones has in recent years been named the face of brands such as Burberry and Dolce & Gabanna. She has also been involved in some other successful film works such as Chalet Girl. In 2011 Jones was awarded the Best New Hollywood Award at the 2011 Hollywood Film Awards.

The film was directed by James Marsh. The film was based on the book written by Jane Hawking, which was then adapted for the films screenplay by Anthony McCarten. There was an estimated budget for the film of $15,000,000. It has managed to make $35,887,263 in the U.S.A. and $31.9 million in the United Kingdom. Worldwide “The Theory of Everything” earned overall $122,873,310 with its biggest markets including both the United States and United Kingdom.

Box Office -When release in five cinemas in North America on November 7th 2014 ‘The Theory of Everything’ earned $207,000 on its opening weekend.

With an average around $41,400 per cinema, following this on November 26th The film was released in a total of 802 theatres across North America, which leads to the film debuting at number 7 and making a further $5 million.

Music- The films score was composed by Jóhann Jóhannsson. His composition has previously been described as “Jóhannsson’s signature blend 9of acoustic instruments and electronics.” The composition involves different levels of live recordings, of an orchestra, band and solo instruments. He also used electronics and more ‘soundscape’ elements. The whole score was recorded at Abbey Road studios.

Reviews – The company Rotten Tomato has reported that around ‘80% of critics gave the film a positive rating’. This assumption is based on over 150 reviews, which each have an average score of around 7.3 out of 10.

Production Development-Once screenwriter Anthony McCarten had written many drafts and met with Jane herself, he met producer Lisa Bruce through their mutual ICM agent. Following this they spent a further three years convincing Jane Hawking to agree to the film adaptation of her book. In April 2023 it was confirmed that Director James Marsh had signed onto the film, along with Eddie Redmayne to play the male lead. It had also been mentioned that the filming would take place in Cambridge and other locations within and across the UK. Later in June 2013 it was confirmed and revealed that Felicity Jones would be accompanying Redmayne by playing the female lead role in the film.

To reach and create an authentic product Marsh used photos and video footage from documentaries that are related to the story. For Redmayne to play his character effectively he met with Stephen as well as researched his life for a period of six months, by watching things such as all of the available interview footage he could find. Redmayne also studied Hawking’s accents and speech patterns whilst being under direction of dialect coach.

Filming-In October 2013 the principal photography had started to take place. Prior to this Working Title had also started filming the Cambridge May Ball scene, which was set in 1963 on the front lawn of the New Court Building around the middle to end of September 2013.

The production companies that were involved with the making of this film are Working Title Films that were in association with Dentsu Pictures and Fuji Television Network.
