Why do kids fail?

• Most children fail because of Math Anxiety.

• Math Anxiety is when a child is unwilling to attempt math problems, has a fear of math classes and usually become nervous in math classes.

• Math anxiety interferes with your child’s working memory and prevents them from concentrating in math class.

• Most of your child’s working memory is focused dealing with negative thoughts and feelings towards math.

When does the symptoms start?


• Some students experience Math Anxiety as early as third or forth grade (Jackson & Leffingwell 1999)

• Most math anxiety occurs in middle school when students experience social pressures (Perina, 2002)

• Freshman year at college can also cause Math Anxiety for students who did not do 4 years of math in high school or who took a year off between high school and college.

Causes…

• Poor test grades.• Inability to complete difficult assignments.• Negative attitude towards math by

students where asked to sit a math test.

• Group A was given funny cartoon to read before the math test

• Group B was given poems to read before the math test

• Group C did the math test without being given anything
