several ideas or phrases into
one coherent and clear
composition.

Transitional
Conclusive
Introductory
• They introduce an idea
• They prepare the reader
for a better development
in the paragraphs that
follow it.
• It’s used at the start of
any document, article or
text.
Transitional
• It develops an idea in
depth.
• Helps in making the
transition between ideas
along the complete body
of text.
Conclusive
• It closes or rounds up the
ideas given in the
previous paragraphs.
• Aims to conclude and
invite to think about the
meaning of everything
that was said along the
text.
• Finishes the text in a
coherent and easy way.
Argumentative: aims to
persuade.
Conceptual: shows the
meaning or development of
a concept.
Chronologic: Shows a series
of events organised in time.
List: shows a series of items,
like an inventory.
Descriptive: describes and
gives details on an issue,
person, etc.
Expository: develops in
more depth a topic or issue.
Expository: shows
information in an organized
way.
Narrative: shows a
sequence of events in an
organized manner.
• Comparative: shows
differences between
concepts.
• Cause/effect: shows the
facts, reasons and
consequences.
• Proposal: approaches an
issue and gives an idea or
solution for it.
• Sequential or process: shows
the development of a process
with its results.
• Deductive: explains from the
generals to the most particulars.
• Inductive: gives the main idea
by the end.
• Conclusive: ends the text,
exposes the conclusions.
