The knight: After being sentenced to death, he had to find the answer to the queen’s question to gain his right to live again.

The queen: After sparing the knight’s life,when he raped a woman, the queen punishes teh knight by sending him out in a quest to find out what women really want more than anything else.

Alison: The Wife of Bath's name; Also, her friend and confidant to whom she met her 5th husband.

The Lothly Lady: This elderly woman tells the Knight what women really desire on the condition that he will marry her. When he grants her the authority in marriage, the old woman transforms into a beautiful young woman.

A young, lusty knight comes across a beautiful

young maiden one day. Overcome by lust and his sense of his own power, he rapes her.

Arthur’s queen and other ladies of the court intercede on his behalf and ask the king to give him one chance to save his own life

if, within one year, he can discover what women want most in the world and report his findings back to the court, he will lose his head

Plot

The woman asks if she can be of help, The

woman tells the knight that he must pledge himself to her in return for her help, and the knight, having no options left, gladly consents

In front of a large audience, the knight tells;  what women most desire is to be in charge of their husbands and lovers. The women agree resoundingly that this is the answer, and the queen spares the knight’s life. 

Plot

At the time the old woman says that she is the

one who gave him the answer and demands that the knight marry her; resigned the knight marries the old woman who causes repulsive. After a discussion of what the knights wants , She offers the knight a choice: either he can have her be ugly but loyal and good, or he can have her young and fair but also coquettish and unfaithful.

Plot

The moral of the folk tale of the loathsome hag is

that true beauty lies within, the Wife of Bath arrives at such a conclusion only incidentally. Her message is that, ugly or fair, women should be obeyed in all things by their husbands.
