Characters

The knight: After being sentenced to death, he had to find the answer to the queen’s question to gain his right to live again.

The queen: After sparing the knight’s life,when he raped a woman, the queen punishes teh knight by sending him out in a quest to find out what women really want more than anything else.

The Lothly Lady: This elderly woman tells the Knight what women really desire on the condition that he will marry her. When he grants her the authority in marriage, the old woman transforms into a beautiful young woman.

A young, lusty knight comes across a beautiful

young maiden one day. Overcome by lust and his sense of his own power, he rapes her.

In front of a large audience, the knight tells;  what women most desire is to be in charge of their husbands and lovers. The women agree resoundingly that this is the answer, and the queen spares the knight’s life.

After a discussion of what the knights wants , She offers the knight a choice: either he can have her be ugly but loyal and good, or he can have her young and fair but also coquettish and unfaithful.

that true beauty lies within, the Wife of Bath arrives at such a conclusion only incidentally. Her message is that, ugly or fair, women should be obeyed in all things by their husbands.
