The University of Tasmania (UTAS), established 1890, is the fourth oldest university in Australia. It is ranked in the top ten in Australia for both teaching and research. It has 25,000 students, including 3500 international students.

The main campus is in Hobart, capital of Tasmania and second oldest city in Australia. Hobart was selected by the Lonely Planet Guide as one of the ten cities to visit in 2013. UTAS also has a campus in Launceston. Launceston was judged the best city for young families in Australia by Suncorp Bank.

Tasmania’s lower cost of living, reasonable fees and the largest scholarship program in Australia have attracted more international students each year. Students like the fact that 80% of them either live on campu, or within walking distance. Lower costs means that there is less reliance on part-time work to pay for living cost. It is for this reason that UTAS has one of the highest success rates for international students in Australia.

UTAS has world leading sciences in geology, environmental studies, maritime studies, marine biology, agricultural science, as well as strong health sciences through the Menzies Research Institute. There are 22 research institutes and centres of excellence attached to the university, providing a strong collaborative environment for research. UTAS has more than 1200 PhD students and many scholarships are available for research.

It also offers a wide range of coursework masters and bachelor degrees in business, education, health sciences, science, law and the arts. The Australian Maritime College (AMC) is part of UTAS and offers maritime studies, including logistics, ship and maritime structural engineering, seafaring, aquaculture and the marine environment. The AMC has a very high graduate employment record, with many graduates obtaining employment before they graduate.

Student services and facilities UTAS provides a free pick up service for students arriving. As well there is free assistance with finding accommodation and free one-to-one English assistance for new students.

A wide range of student services are available on campus, including careers advice, medical assistance, student assistance and advice.

On campus there are banks, restaurants, cafeterias and bars, bookshops, 11 libraries and special student learning centres where students can access computers and other equipment in a pleasant study environment. The Central Science Laboratory houses sophisticated equipment in a central location.
