BORING!

Stop for just a moment: how does the answer to this question help either of you? If there were a Holy Grail mouthpiece and reed, you can bet we'd all know about it by now. There are much better questions to ask a pro that can help your playing -- and these won't bore the musician to tears.

What is your favorite piece to privately practice?

This question gives you insight into several things. It shows you how they like to spend their time, and it also shows you what piece they personally think is great, even if audiences don’t agree. I once met a professional saxophonist (while he was on tour) and in answer to this question he told me that he liked to play the melodies from famous operas. Everyone has a unique musical “thing” that they like, and this question will help you get to the bottom of it.

What is the first performance you remember vividly?

Everyone remembers their first time, or at least the first time they felt like a big shot. While not many of us remember our first 6th grade concert, we usually do remember that one concert where something really magical happened. Ask this question and prepare to be amazed at what events helped shape your saxophone idol’s life.

If you were only allowed to practice for 10 minutes a day…

If you want to find the fastest way to improve, ask this question. Nobody knows how to maximize result from their practice time like a professional working musician. You have to get over the fact that 10 minutes a day is absurd, but beyond that it will give you insight into what you should be spending the most time focused on in your own practice sessions.
