Tidal Energy Energy of Waves
What is Tidal Energy?
• Tides are waves heading towards or away from the shore
• Generating energy from wave motion
How does it work? The tide flows in two directions under the water
How does it work? When the tide flows forward, the propellers turn
How does it work? When the tide flows backwards, the propellers
turn in the opposite direction
How does it work? The faster the
propellers turn, the more energy is created
The generator turns the motion energy into useable electricity
How does it work? Here is a video showing how it works
YouTube: How Tidal Energy Works
Where is it being used?La Rance, France
Annapolis, USA
Reasons to Use ItCosts nothing to create energy
Consistent wave patterns
Renewable
Doesn’t harm the environment with chemicals
Lots of coastline to build
Can be used as pillars for bridges & roadways
Reasons to NOT Use ItChanging the underwater environment
Site specific: weather, erosion etc.
Changes the clarity of the water
Not a lot of energy created
CostsCost is mostly dam construction
10 years to build
Lasts for a long time
ConclusionWe should continue to build Tidal energy
stations
Good for the environment and renewable
