Understand Twitter
• Be personable, be friendly … build friendships!• Use twitter as a research tool for your company
– Ask people what they think of your brand, your latest promotion etc. – Search what people are saying about you
• Be creative – use a pull strategy and create demand
Twitter Do’s
• Be yourself – become comfortable with your identity. Relax social media doesn’t mind if you ROFL a little bit or lol
• Be SOCIAL – talk to people. You don’t have to sell or market, just chat.
• Scratch people’s backs – favour for a favour, eye for an eye .. You get the point!
Twitter Do’s
• ReTweet interesting content – it will show people that you are interested in cool stuff and draw attention towards you
• Be active – constantly engage, constantly show your presence
• Keep track of people you are engaging with
Twitter Don’ts
• Don’t over-advertise
• Don’t automate everything– I personally un-follow anyone who uses RSStweets
• These RSS Tweets are annoying because they come in bundles, clutter your home-screen and serve little or no purpose to the user because they back link to other sites
• Don’t be rude, condescending or vulgar
Twitter Don’ts
• Don’t be boring– AKA always repeating the same things (do you listen to people who always tell you the same story?)
• Don’t tweet every little detail of your day
• Don’t be too personal (You don’t want me to give an example)
Twitter Apps
• TweetDeck – Platform that allows you to manage multiple accounts and Facebook account as well – Desktop platform – easy to use interface, useful in tracking keywords, trends etc.
– Other options include CoTweet and Hootsuite
• search.twitter.com - search your industry, yourself, your competitors and more (create RSS Feeds)– Advanced feature can be used to follow people in your area
• Use bit.ly to shorten URL’s – Bit.ly has tracking capabilities as well!
Twitter Apps
• Twellow – categorizes users based on different categories and industries– Use this to build your network
• GeoChirp and Twitter Atlas – huge!! Will get into detail shortly
• Twitdom – great resource for apps (categorized by functions and uses)
Twitter Standards
• Try to respond to as many @replies as possible• Try to respond quickly to @replies• #FollowFriday aka #FF
– Return the favour, they will love you for it!– 2 ways of doing #FF
• When somebody show’s you love – show love back
