Mass Communication Journalism - Radio/Television School of Mass Communication College of Professional Studies Why major in Mass Communication at UALR? The Mass Communication program at UALR is located in the center of the state’s media, government, corporate, and healthcare activity. This provides many opportunities and net- working contacts for our students. We have a student-centered program featuring faculty and staff who are ready to help you whether you are starting as a freshman or transferring from another institution. Academic Programs BA in Mass Communication with emphases in: Journalism (Newspaper/Magazine and Radio-TV) Strategic Communication (Public Relations) Media Production and Design Mass Media MA in Journalism Career Preparation A BA in Mass Communication with an empha- sis in Journalism prepares students for careers in newspapers, magazines, radio, television, or internet journalism as reporters, writers, photog- raphers, or editors. Admission After admission to UALR, any student may de- clare a major or minor in journalism. To dis- cuss opportunities in the School of Mass Com- munication, students should visit the director of the School at Stabler Hall 705, call the School at 501.569.3250, or e-mail [email protected]. Graduation Requirements For the Bachelor of Arts Degree: Minimum of 124 hours/credits, completion of UALR core and second language requirements, 42 hours of major requirements, completion of a minor or cognate (18 hours), UALR GPA of 2.0 overall. Facilities School offices are in room 705 in Stabler Hall. Most classrooms, labs, and the Dempsey Television Studio are in Stabler Hall. In addition to classes taught in our classrooms, laboratories, and studios, we also offer online courses. Special Opportunities and Services The School offers opportunities for students to be- come involved in student media through The Forum, Channel 62, and The Rock Reporter. The School has chapters of four national student organizations and an honor society that students may join. Stu- dents may also be eligible to take an internship or co-op with local media or production organizations. Students may also apply for a number of scholar- ships. In 2008, School of Mass Communication stu- dents won more than $30,000 in scholarships. Faculty The School of Mass Communication has 10 full-time faculty members who are committed to excellence in education. That commitment targets student educa- tion through the use of traditional classroom teach- ing techniques as well as innovative methods of educational outreach such as service learning with non-profit organizations and work with local schools. Our faculty are all professionally active, serving lo- cal, statewide, and national media organizations in leadership positions, as well as being practicing mass media professionals. Dr. Jamie M.
