I’m Philipp, and together with my colleague Obi, I’m going to present UiT Open Research Data, which is the first step into research data management at our university library. As for now, we are a group of six people working with this project. They are all listed on this slide.
• Long tradition of Open Access to publications at UiT Library • Plans to get started with open access to research data
• In 2013 request from the linguistics community at UiT for open access
service for linguistic research data and statistical code
• Project group: – Members: University library and faculty staff from linguistics
department – Main task: Discussing basic functionalities and requirements

Presentation Notes
Having had a long tradition of Open Access to research publications, the UiT Library wanted for quite some time to get started with Open Access also to research data. In 2013 we were asked by the linguistics community at UiT to help them establishing (and running) a service for archiving and sharing linguistic research data and statistical code.= This request was just what we needed = A little push to get started with research data management. We established a project group consisting of our group at the library that I just mentioned, and the initiating members from the linguistics department. We then had regular meetings where we discussed the basic functionalities and requirements of this new service.
TROLLing – The Tromsø Repository of Language and Linguistics
• Research data and statistical code in the field of language and linguistics • One dataverse – serveral studies • Data contributors may come from anywhere in the world • Limited to open data • Officially launched on 18th June 2014 • More info on TROLLing blog site: http://site.uit.no/trolling/

Presentation Notes
Our work resulted in TROLLing – The Tromsø Repository of Language and Linguistics - which is an archive for research data and statistical code in the field of language and linguistics. The TROLLing archive is ONE dataverse, and the contributions consist of datasets or studies. TROLLing is an international service, meaning that researchers from anywhere in the world may contribute to it by uploading their data as studies. But , the archive is limited to open data. Archiving other types of data (e.g. sensitive data) imposes strict security requirements and needs to be handled by other providers (e.g. Norsk samfunnsvitenskapelig datatjeneste NSD or Norstore). TROLLing was officially launched on 18th June last year. You can get more information about TROLLing on our blog site.
• Curation carried out by subject librarians: – Contributor approval – Relevance of uploaded data – Quality and comprehensiveness of metadata – Structure and format of uploaded data – Releasing approved studies
• In cooperation with the faculty staff at UiT:
– How-to and best practice guides – Promotion: Conferences, contact with editors, videos, ...

Presentation Notes
Running an open research data service like TROLLing requires both curational work and some co-operation with faculty staff: Subject librarians carry out the following curational tasks: They approve new contributors, they check whether the uploaded data are within the thematic scope of the archive, they check the quality and comprehensiveness of the entered metadata, they evaluate the structure and format of the uploaded data, and finally they release approved studies. In co-operation with faculty staff at UiT, our library also provides how-to and best practice guides, and we are involved in different promotional activities, such as conference presentations, contact with journal editors and producing promotional videos and other material.
TROLLing and UiT Open Research Data
• TROLLing = Dataverse pilot to be followed by other academic disciplines and research communities at UiT
• UiT Open Research Data (http://opendata.uit.no) = a general open access service at UiT for sharing, citing, preserving, discovering, analyzing and reusing research data
• Expanding the service to other subject areas will likely be done at the institutional level: – Inviting research communities at UiT – Establishing new members of UiT ORD in collaboration

Presentation Notes
But TROLLing is hopefully only our starting point into open research data.We use it as a Dataverse pilot to be followed by other academic disciplines and research communities at UiT. The more general service – or the umbrella dataverse, if you want - we have called UiT Open Research Data, which is a general open access service for handling research data at UiT.TROLLing and the future archives are sub-dataverses within this umbrella. When we start expanding the service to other subject areas, this will likely be done to handle research data at the institutional level: We are going to invite the research communities at UiT to make use of this service. And in collaboration with them, we will establish new dataverses according to their needs and wishes. So if they need an international service, this is of course fine with us.
As of 19th May 2015: • 98 registered contributors from
32 different institutions (3 in Norway, 29 abroad)

Here you se a screenshot of the front page of UiT Open Research Data. Although UiT Open Research Data still is in its initial phase, we can nevertheless give you some preliminary user statistics based on the TROLLing archive. As of May this year, there are 98 registered contributors from 32 different institutions, 3 of them in Norway, and 29 from abroad. There have been uploaded 26 datasets consisting of 197 data files. And there has been a total of 588 downloads from the archive. (Both individual files and groups of files can count as one download.) So, as you see, we have still have a lot of work to do in order to promote our new service.
