Purpose

The purpose of this magazine is to show the public the top rappers and hip hop artists in the hip hop industry. This magazines purpose is also to let the public know some inside information about their favourite hip hop artists, which makes a personal relationship between the reader and their artist as they would read information about their artist and maybe for example find that they have the same interest in some thing, this would form a personal relationship and could make the reader like or idolise the artist more, this could be through the quote that is in this front cover magazine “Diddy finally speaks to us”. Also, this magazine denotes to their audience and the public information about the top new hip hop songs and collaborations that have happened in the industry. The strap line of the XXL magazine is “Hip Hop on a Higher Level” this connotes that this magazine is the best of them all, this could also mean that maybe they have invested more time and chosen to make their hip hop magazines even better then they've ever been.

Page 5: Unit 13

Audience

• For the XXL magazine the target audience is young people who are into Hip Hop and Rap music. If I was to put an age rating it would be 16+ mainly because of some of the words and subjects that are talked about within the music magazine. XXL magazine seem to be a big influence on the young generation, stereotypical speaking this magazine is for Hispanic and African American origins as many of the artist are from these origins and the music that XXL cover in their magazines are Hip Hop and Rap and this music is inspired by African American and Hispanic cultures

Page 6: Unit 13

Form and Style

The form and style of the magazines is very much like any other hip hop and rap magazine would be. The masthead “XXL” is very large just like the “VIBE” magazine, my chosen magazine is XXL could imply that they are more passionate and serious about their work as they want to be the largest ad greatest size which could connote to the audience that if they purchase this magazine they will be getting the best quality magazine right now. The XXL magazines are always laid out very similar, their mastheads being behind the artists ad having their masthead around the same size at all times, as you ca see here they also have the main headline in the same place. The XXL magazine also always have their barcodes in the place although here they are landscape ad portrait. The colours in the XXL magazine are very clear and very routine, they always go for a very simple background colour and the headlines match the colour of their mastheads. The language used in the XXL magazines are very much the language that the artist are featured in would use, the type of language that is used in these magazines is slang, for example you have the quote “the dopest music” this is the type of slang that the magazine is full of. This gives a very stereotypical view as it tells the audience that the magazine, music and artist within the magazine are very ruff and very stereotypical thugs

Page 7: Unit 13

Genre• XXL magazine covers news about current and upcoming hip-hop artists over the

nation. In this they cover what is known as 2014's Freshman Class which consists of twelve of hip-hop and R&B's artists to look out for. What XXL covers is often explicit interviews with different musicians of the hip-hop genre, for example the interview with Chris Brown where they talk about Chris Brown being different from other rap artists. This lets the readers read his interview and lets them know what makes him independent from other artist that may be very similar with one another. There are many stereotypes throughout the XXL magazine, such as the picture of Chris Brown on this slide, the smoke flowing out of his mouth can imply that they are very relaxed artist and that they do things that are frowned upon such as smoking with an attitude. Additionally the choice of clothing that the magazine gave him is very unique, the chains are very stereotypical as when the public think of rap artist they are full of flashy jewellery big chains and fancy cars, and mainly people who intend to break the law. This stereotype is what XXL try to aim for as they are the leading rap and hip hop magazine

Page 8: Unit 13

Frequency of the magazine

• XXL magazine produce 6 magazines per year, therefore they let out one magazines every two months. The magazines are sold around £3.95

Page 9: Unit 13

Socio-economic needs • XXL magazine would be classed in the D and E

category of socio-economic needs, as the magazine attracts a lot of young students as they like the type of lifestyle and music these artists make and the fact that they are in the E category, not all young people find this type f magazine interesting but stereotypically lots of young people like artists in the magazine. Another reason why I picked this magazine to be in the D and E category is because much of the stories and the music with in the artists life are about struggles and coming from hard up bringing, many people who are unemployed put up with these situations on a daily basis therefore they may listen to music like this and read magazines like this as it reflects on their life and they build personal relationship with the artists.

Double Page Spread (DPS) and Annotated Codes & Conventions on this slide

Large picture of Chris Brown over a whole page. This would attract the public to buy as it’s a very eye catching image. This picture is a focus on Chris Brown which tells the audience that this story will be focused on him

Web address on the bottom of the page, this allows the reader to find their website online and read more about the magazine

This page has credits to show you who is being interviewed or spoken about

The quote given by Chris Brown “I’M DIFFERENT” could attract the audience as it could imply that the story is about something personal

Page 11: Unit 13

Drop Capital-The drop capital is very unusual as it takes up half of the page.

Page number and web address-This magazine always has a page number and a web address, this allows the reader to access the magazine online. This is a example of technological convergence.

This page is covered in text of the interview. The text on this page is very organised they are all the same width. Although the interview is organised it’s a very unusual as the interview is more text based rather then questions and answer based.

Although the other page is very text based the next page is very picture based as it is a full page spread of Chris Brown. This picture has a very unique style as

Page 12: Unit 13

Process of production• First of all you must have a deadline for each story to be given to the editor of the magazine,

you also must have time to proof read the magazine. You must have a printing deadline and a distribution deadline. Lastly you must have enough time for the editorial board to look over the magazine and add their comments.

Step by step process of production.1. Create a production schedule2. Create a content page3. Create a detailed plan for each story4. Proof read and edit stories5. Magazine is ready to be designed6. One final check before sending of to be printed.

Where XXL magazine is sold?XXL magazine sells in most stores throughout the UK. Main stores would be big supermarkets such as Asda, Sainsbury's and Tesco's. this magazine also sells in many corner shops and newsagents.

How will it be presentedmy magazine will be presented with lots of pictures of artists with small stories on the

side, this will most likely include advertisement just like in XXL. By doing this I

have to take great care in order to not make it look like a ‘we love pop’ music magazine as

those magazines are very different in stereotypical views

Price of magazine and frequency-

This will range from £2 to £4. my magazine will be

published once every month.

Font styles.

The font I have chosen is ‘Myriad Pro’ as I feel that this is the best font for my magazine as its simple bold and stands especially if put into the right colour scheme. I have decided that the name of my magazine will be Dope. I have chosen Dope because its hip hop slang, many people in the rap industry use this. The word Dope is slang for cool or sick, therefore this is the language that my target audience will be using. As well as the word meaning cool, it also another word for drugs, mainly marijuana which hip hop artists stereotypically rap about.

MYRIAD PRO

Page 17: Unit 13

Summary of ideas for magazine.

Genre The genre of my magazine is going to be Rap and Hip Hop, this will be very identical to the Hip Hop magazine XXL. It will cover the latest and biggest rappers in the Hip Hop industry.Format of magazineThe colour of my magazine is going to be black and yellow, the black will be the more dominant colour and yellow will be the less dominant. The size of my magazine will be 27.5cm-lengt and 20cm-width

Page 18: Unit 13

Target Audience

• The age range fort my magazine would be from 16 to adult. This is because the content and images in the magazine might be a bit unappropriated for people under the age of 16.

• The Gender of the magazine will more likely be male as the content in it is very male, as well as this, most of the rappers in the magazine would be male rappers. Although I say the magazine is more for males it is for both genders as there will also be female artist and they might have stories or artist that females are interested in. the rappers and music fetured in this magazine will Rap and Hip Hop therefore this music will be Hispanic and African American

Page 19: Unit 13

Hartley

• Ethnicity- stereotypically XXL magazine would sell to African American or Hispanic ethnicity. This is because rap and hip hop music was started by these ethnicity and most rap artists today are black or of a African American ethnicity. Although stereotypically this magazine is for black people, many white people would also be looking at this product as more white rappers are in the hip hop industry.

• Age-XXL magazine would mainly look to sell to teenagers and young adults. This is because it is known that young people like this type of music. This is also because many rap artist are very young and therefore the customers of XXL magazine can have something in relation with the artist.

Page 20: Unit 13

Demographics

• Socio-economic factors- XXL magazines readers are classed in the E and D category, this is because the people classed in E and D are unskilled and unemployed individuals, as hip hop artists show an image of poverty the music is connected with the categorise of unemployed and uneducated. As well as this, people who listen to Hip Hop music are stereotypically unskilled and haven't educated very well as of poverty.

Page 21: Unit 13

Maslow's hierarchy of needs.

• My magazine fits in the top of the pyramid of Maslow's theory. My music magazine gives people creativity and morality as they learn about an artist and what the artist are really like, creativity could be in this theory as the magazine allows the audience to view many different type of style of clothing that the artist wear and the personalities they have, this would give the audience creativity as they would take the information from the artists that they maybe wouldn’t usually know about. Reading magazines in not something you would think do unless your basic needs were met which are further down the pyramid.

Page 22: Unit 13

Psychographics

• Stereotypically people who listen to rap or would read the XXL magazines would be put into the strugglers section. This is because people who listen to rap are looked at as unskilled individuals with low education. These people are mainly physical skilled or mechanically, such as a car mechanic. Psychographics also tell us that this group are heavy consumers or alcohol and maybe drugs. Rap music involves the use of alcohol, drugs and money therefore the strugglers table would suit the XXL stereotypically.

Page 23: Unit 13

Spending power

• As my magazine would be in the D and E category the spending power on this magazine cant be to high as stereotypically my customers are unskilled individuals therefore they don’t have massive amounts of money to spend on things such as magazines. As of this I have decided to make my magazine cost around £3.50. this is because we know that our target audience is young adults who maybe don’t have as much money on the side to spend on magazines every month.

Page 24: Unit 13

Socio-economic needs

• My magazine would most likely fit in the E and D category, this is because stereotypically Rap and Hip Hop is a thug and gangster type of music, therefor people such as thugs are placed in the E and D category as they are stereotypically unskilled and unemployed.

Page 25: Unit 13

Similarities between my magazine and XXL magazine.

Masthead- My masthead is very similar to XXL as I felt that a simply bold and big masthead is the most suitable as my magazine is Rap and that is generally a very serious music therefore I chose a bold and hard masthead just like XXL.

Layout- The layout of my magazine will also be very similar to XXL magazine as I found that XXL aren't very flashy with there artist, there is always a simple background and only around 3 colours, which for them is black, red and white. My layout will be just like XXL with the artist in the middle, the shot of the artist will either be a middle shot or a close up of his face like Lil Wayne in the front cover of XXL on the right hand side. The masthead will be on the top left hand side and if the artist over laps with the masthead I will make sure that the masthead is underneath the artist, this could show that my magazine take pride in their artist that they feature

Colour- The colour of XXL magazine is mainly black, red and white, from this I've chosen to use black, yellow and white as I think the three colours will stand out against one another

Front cover- the front cover of my magazine will look similar to the XXL magazine covers as I think that they are appropriate covers for the genre of the magazine.

Page 26: Unit 13
Page 28: Unit 13

Mood board conclusion

• As you can see from my previous slide of my mood board, my magazine will be a very African American genre as most of the rappers are black or from a African American origin, this will be a stereotypical gangster and thug magazine. There will also be white rappers in my magazine such as Eminem but the majority of the rappers will be of African American ethnicity. In the second mood board you can clearly see what kind of clothing and accessories you are likely to see on my artists. This shows a very stereotypical gangster image that rappers go for.

Page 31: Unit 13

InspirationInspiration

I've used these as my source of inspiration for my magazine double page spreads. I didn’t want to completely use their ideas therefore I changed them slightly. The drop capital in the Chris Brown double page spread really gave me a good idea of how I could use that to make the page look more professional. Similarities such as the picture on my first double page spread of the mid shot of the artist is very similar to the XXL magazine close up of Chris Brown.

Page 32: Unit 13

Front cover

Barcode- the barcode on the bottom right of the page will also include the logos of Facebook and twitter

Masthead- the masthead could be yellow on a black box or the other way round, this is just a plan so far so changes could be made when I see it on Photoshop. The strapline will fit under the masthead where exclusive also is

Story separators- these are going to be the other stories in the magazines that we think people will find interesting, these will involve artist like 2 Chainz and Tyga

Anchorage text- this will be place under the main story to give the audience a extra hook to get them to purchase the magazine

Headline- this will be the main story in the magazine. This is the one we feel is most important.

Page 36: Unit 13

Masthead ideasHere are the four ideas for my mastheads, I feel like all of them stand out and will attract a pass along audience, therefore my magazine would be eye catching for the audience and would hopefully lead them to purchasing the magazine.

Final decision- the final decision for my magazine masthead will be Dope. This may be that I will change the font style in future purposes if it doesn't look good on the magazine page. But I feel that the word dope will fit my magazine the most. The yellow background with the black text makes the name of the magazine stand out really well. Although swag and dope are both used in the hip hop slang, I feel that dope is much more connected to the rap music and the target audience that I will be aiming at.

Page 37: Unit 13

Social media• Social media is a very important part of my magazine, this I because my target audience are

young people and therefore it would be the ideal place to interact with them. I would place my social media site on my magazine in the bottom right of the front cover in order to let my audience know that they can interact with the magazine on social media sites such as, twitter and Facebook. As well as social media sites, I will also make sure that at the bottom of every page there will be a web link to my magazine page, this is a good way to getting my audience to visit the magazine website and find more information on the article or artist that they are reading about. Social media will also allow my customers to join in on discussion about the recent subjects

Page 38: Unit 13

ProposalThe proposal ideas are just below the PowerPoint presentation.

Page 39: Unit 13

Target Audience• The target audience for XXL magazine is categorised in the age groups between

16 to about 30. XXL magazine target audience are classed in the D and E category of the demographics table, this is because stereotypically people who rap or listen to rap are gangsters or are involved in a gangster lifestyle this is the genre XXL magazine are based on. The reason that the target audience starts from 16 is because some of the content within the magazine may be unsuitable for younger ages. XXL magazine is classed in the E and D category, this is because stereotypically people who rap or listen to rap are from hard backgrounds and are less skilled and able of doing intellectual jobs. Stereotypically the target audience would be young black males, this is from the Hartley theory. Stereotypically my magazine would sell to young African Americans as the hip hop and rap industry is mostly full of African American rappers, therefore it is know to be supported by young African Americans. This would also apply for gender as most rappers are male rappers as they rap about power and in the eyes of a rapper that is what they want, therefore more males would listen to rap as the subjects they rap about may not be as appeling to the female gender as it is to the male gender.

Page 40: Unit 13

House styleThe house style is a very important convention for the presentation of the magazine, therefore I have spent a long time thinking about how I will present this essential ingredient to make the magazines brand identity stand out. First thing is colour. The colour of my magazine will be yellow, black and white as I feel these colours will look really well together and the yellow will stand out around the black and white. Another thing will be the positioning of the magazine masthead logo, which will be positioned next to the number, and next to the masthead logo will also be placed a web page (Cross Media Convergence) so that my readership can visit the website to access more exclusive content, as well as, through technological convergence means, watch an interview with a famous ‘star’ on top of reading about it in the magazine. The inclusion of a website for the magazine will also ‘inform’ (Katz) the fans go onto my website and find out more information about the artist within the magazine. Social media will be big part of my magazine as my target audience is young and therefore they all use social media daily. This would be a great way to advertise the magazine and also let people discuses our latest reviews and stories about the artist that are in my magazine. The font style for my magazine will be Myriad Pro this is because it’s a really simple and good font to have for a magazine. This font style will be used for my masthead as it fits perfectly with a drop shadow. There where a lot of choices of font styles but at the end I decided to go for the simply one, this was because if I went for a fancy one it would not appeal to my target audience. The layout of my magazine will go right under the masthead box, the strapline will include slang. I feel like I related the title of the magazine well to the strap line as the strap line uses the name of the magazine. The strapline will be ‘RAPS DOPEST MAGAZINE’ the word ‘dope’ is African American slang for cool same applies with ‘sick’ or ‘swag’. But as well as ‘dope is used for cool, the word ‘dope also means drugs, mainly drugs such as cannabis, this relates to the magazine and the artist featured within as they are well know to do illegal drugs and rap about issues like this.

Page 41: Unit 13

This is my hand drawn draft these drafts will help me a lot to design my magazine as I can having something to look back on if I forget what I want to design the magazine like.

Other ways that it will help me is by having the hand drawn drafts I already have planned what the layout and what I want the magazine to look like, therefore I wont be changing my magazine half way through the process as I already know what I want to the magazine to look like.

Page 42: Unit 13

Double page spread Title- this will be the tile of the story, this will be a really important party of the story as the title is the quote that grabs the readers attention therefore it must stand out in order to sell.

Picture- the picture of the artist will be a mid shot over the two pages. This may change in time depending on what the final piece looks like. XXL tend to take a full page picture with no writing presented on it, this is to make the artist stand out.

Exclusive- this is in the top right corner, it will be in a red box in order to grab the readers attention and let them know that this is a exclusive story. This is used in XXL magazine to show the reader what stories are most important, we have used this idea as well

Drop capital- this drop capital is a inspiration from the XXL double page spread, this works very well in XXL as the drop capital stands out as soon as you open the page. The drop capital will be very big in order to grab the readers attention and make him read on.Web address and page number- the web dress and page number are very important. This is because the web address allows my customer to visit our website so that they can get more information. XXL do this also they put their web address by the page number, this is very similar with my magazine.

Comparisons

Page 43: Unit 13

Magazine flat planThis is my magazine flat plan, this includes what my magazine will have on each page.

Page 44: Unit 13

My double page spread draft article.

• The interviews that inspired me where in the XXL magazine where Chris Brown is being interviewed, as well as being inspired by the interview I was also inspired by the layout as it was a very unique layout. For example the big drop capital in Chris Browns interview.

The artist that I will be featuring on the front cover will be Logic, as well as on the front cover he will also be he artist that I will be interviewing as I think that then I can link the headline with the interview.

Page 45: Unit 13

Questions and answers in my interview with Logic

Q-what age are you now?A- I just turned 24 actuallyQ- where were you brought up?A- I was born and raised in Gaithersburg in MarylandQ- when did your carrier properly start?A- my carrier properly started in the year 2009Q- What record label are you with at this moment in timeA- at this moment in=m with a record label called Def JamQ- is it true that when you where a young kid your brother use to sell crack cocaine to your father?A- yeah when I was a little kid my dad use to buy crack of my brother and my brother was a dealer, both my parents where crack addicts.Q- what was your relationship like with your dad when you where young?A- When I was a kid my dad wasn’t a big part of my life, I don’t really remember seeming him around a lot, but as I grew up I managed to keep in contact with him and now I still have contact with him.Q- is it true that you where a talented English student?A- yes I guess so, I started skipping classes in the 10th grade and I failed every class except English, then the school gave up on me and kicked me out.Q- when you where a young kid at the age of 13 you met your mentor Solomon taylor, wheat was your relationship like and how did he help you get into music?A- Yes Solomon Taylor was my mentor he bought me numerous cd’s with simple beats to them and told me to write lyrics over them and from this I started to make music.Q- through out your carrier you had a few names before your build up of fame tell us about one.A- yes I had numerous names as I was growing up rapping, one of them was psychological , this is because I just loved the word because it was about the mind and I knew that that’s what I wanted my music to consist ofQ- In 2009 you seem to be going throuigh a very bad stage relationship wise, tell us something about that.A- yeah I came out of a 5 year relationship while working on my music, you can put your everything into a relationship, but that doesn't mean that you will get it back, and when I created my first mix tape I could see the amount of time I sacrificed I order to make my music and I can see what I get back and that’s the same I give. Although through this I feel as I have sacrificed so much from my relationships to friends and family.

Page 46: Unit 13

Reflection on the creation of the magazine.

• The front cover and the double page spread where both created on Photoshop. The front cover was created first, but before this we had to plan what we wanted the magazine to look like, we did this through hand drawn and magazine flat plans. Once we did this we created the front cover.

Step by step of the creation of the front cover.• First of all we had to get the measurements of the magazine in order to create the right sized canvas• I used the ruler tool in order to see where everything will be positioned, these where things such as, barcode,

masthead and strapline• Then I inserted the background of my choice• I then created and placed the masthead, small version of the masthead to go above the barcode, strapline, barcode

and the exclusive box in their positions that where set out by the ruler tool in order to help me get the exact positing right.

• After the barcode was placed in I used the ruler tool to in order to measure out two small boxes so that I could put the Facebook and twitter logo in, thanks to the quick selection tool it was nice and easy to crop the logos out of their white backgrounds

• I placed the taken picture of my artist on the page, I used the quick selection tool in order to crop the surrounding s of him in the picture as I only wanted him. I placed him slightly to the left of the centre of the magazine.

• I used the spot healing tool in order to get rid of any spots on the artist face that where un wanted, I then found picture of tattoos which I applied on my artist face so that he had a more of a rap stereotype look. I made the tattoos look real by editing them to look like they are on his skin.

• I added the headline story across the artist chest, then I also added the side stories on the right side of the magazine, I used the ruler tool to get the separation between each artist name, I also used the text tool in order to put a little advert in the bottom of the magazine.

Page 47: Unit 13

Creation of double page spread• This was also created on the Photoshop software.Step by step creation of double page spread.• I used the ruler tool in order to get all the positioning of the magazine right• I created the background, I then found a picture on the internet of smoke that I then used the quick

selection tool in order to get rid of the background so that it would go with the black background• I imported the masthead and exclusive box from the front cover in to the double page spread, this

saved me a lot of time rather then recreating an identical copy• Also used the small masthead in order to place it next to the page number at the bottom of the

magazine and the web address• I then imported another picture of my artist, again I used the quick selection tool in order to get the

background put. I the positioned him in the middle.• I then used the text tool in order to put a big quote from an interview with my artist on the left page,

I also used this to put the editors, photographers and artists names• Finally in word I created a question and answer interview. I did this in word as photo shop text

doesn't have spell check and therefore isn't as affective as the word software, after I finished the interview I inserted it in to the right hand page of the magazine.

• Finally step was using the pen tool. This was a really use full tool as I used it to put text around the artist body, I had to create a line around the artist body and the text fitted in at the same shape of the outside of his body. This was a great tool as it was very effective and looked very professional.

That is how I created both my magazine and double page spread, Photoshop was very used full as it had all the tools I need and more

Purpose of the magazine

The Source’s strapline is ‘The Bible of Hip Hop Music, Culture and Politics’ the connotations behind this strap line may be that the source is trying to get a message over to their audience that ‘The Source’ is the best magazine for hip hop culture and politics. This is because they use the word bible which they are trying to get a message over that this is the best possible magazine to get. The publisher of this magazine is ‘North Star music publishing ltd’ their slogan is ‘music is our business’ the connotations behind this slogan is that north start publisher specialise in music as it is their business therefore they will be very experienced in this subject. The price of the source magazine is around £5 this is quiet expensive for a Hip hop magazine, although you are able to purchase subscription for the magazine in order to get electronic copies.

Page 51: Unit 13

Publisher

• The publishers of source magazine are called ‘North star music publishing ltd’ this is the publishing group that publishes the sources. They also publish magazines such as ‘Jones’

Page 52: Unit 13

Form and styleThe form and style of this magazine is very much like XXL. This may be because they are also the same type of music genre. The masthead is always bold and always has ‘The’ against the ‘s’ of the word source, as show below. The size of the magazines is a4 like most magazines. The language in this magazine is also much like XXL. This is because they feature the same music. This means the language in the magazine has a lot of African American and Hispanic slang as that’s their target audience. Although as well as having slang this magazine also features politics and culture , therefore for that section of the magazine they have very intellectual language for the upper class individuals. The colour scheme in this magazine depends on who's the artist on the front page sometimes the mast head is grey and black as shown below and sometime the masthead is red. The source magazine varies their colours o their magazines so therefore they don’t really have a colour scheme that they stick to.

Page 53: Unit 13

Content The content in The Source magazine is very similar to XXL when it comes to language and the choice of artists they pick. Although the source magazine content is also very different as they feature a lot of articles that include things such as culture and politics. As well as this they feature general information about rappers rather then their music. As you can see below the source magazine focus less on the actual music and the stories that the artist have. As well as this as you can see the headline on the right is also a article headline by the source. The source magazine also focuses on the political problems and culture discussions. This makes the magazine very unique as it includes a lot of information from different for people with different areas of interest. This is because it consists of what a normal rap magazine would have, but also it has a very wide range of stories going from president Obamas speeches to ice cubes latest information on re-joining the NWA crew.

Page 54: Unit 13

ContentAs you can see here is a article about Eminem. As this is partly a rap magazine you would think that they would talk about his latest songs and collaborations, instead The Source magazine tends to talk about other things such as his life or what he is currently doing. As you can see they don’t advertise his music in anyway and at the bottom of the page they have a number of song names and not a dingle of them is Eminem's song. This magazine is very unique as they don’t focus on the music but more about the stories about the artist, this is what the source magazine brings to the table that is very different compared to other magazines. This is why The Source magazine are one of the largest magazine in the United States

Page 55: Unit 13

Genre• The genre of this magazine varies. This is because in this magazine they

feature rap, culture and politics. Therefore for each section there is a different genre. The main section is hip hop therefore the majority of the genre will be for the African American ethnicity. The pictures in the hip hop section of the magazines are very much stereotypical for a rap artist, this is because in the photo there are lots of chains, cigars and anything that represents wealth. This is what rappers tends to show

Page 56: Unit 13

Target audience• The target audience for The Source is young people who are into Hip

Hop and Rap music. If I was to put an age rating it would be 16+ mainly because of some of the words and subjects that are talked about within the music magazine. The Source magazine seem to be a big influence on the young generation, stereotypical speaking this magazine is for Hispanic and African American origins as many of the artist are from these origins and the music that The Source cover in their magazines are Hip Hop and Rap and this music is inspired by African American and Hispanic culture. As well as it being a target audience for young African Americans, it is also known to be a magazine for people who like to read about culture and politics as tis magazine also features this in. therefore this magazine could also be for the people who are of upper class, such as middle class as these areas tend to appeal more to the middle class

Page 57: Unit 13

Frequency

• The source magazine releases 10 magazines a year, this is just less than one magazines a month. It is a unusual amount of magazines as most magazine either sell weekly or monthly.

Survey monkey feedbackAs you can see from my survey people seemed to enjoy my pitch. This is important as I didn’t bore anyone and kept them interested about my magazine presentation.

As you can see from these response I have a lot of positives of what people like about my pitch. The reviews have stated that I included a good amount of detail in each slide and that the connotations behind the magazine was impressive. As well as this according to the reviews my financial slide was impressive. This is important as it showed that I research my information well and explained my financial areas of the magazine well.

Page 62: Unit 13

This questions asks how well I spoke in the pitch. As you can see %80 have agreed that I spoke clearly and are impressed with this. On the other hand the other %20 have disagreed and think that there is room for improvement. This is important as I know that I have to work on speaking clearly when doing my pitch. through my reviews I know I have areas to improve therefore I would have to practise speaking to a class more clearly and louder in order for every individual to understand what I'm saying.

This question asks the reviewers whether they liked my magazine front cover or not. As you can %100 said yes this is important as the magazine front cover is the main selling point to an individual in a shop, this is what attracts them to buy the magazine as they think that the magazine will be interesting through the front cover.

Page 63: Unit 13

In this question it asks if my double page spread looked good, just like the front cover the double page spread also got %100. this is also important as the double page spread is the main story in the magazine therefore it has to look good in order to convince the target audience that the magazine is one that they will like and buy on a monthly bases. As the designer I feel there could be some areas to improve such as the size of the editors, artist and interviewers name but according to the reviews there is no areas to improve.

As you can see all the responses state that my magazine covers have improved from the original covers. This is important because it means that the slides now look professional. This is important because it shows that people like the covers therefore they are eye catching, and this will lead to higher sales as if they are impressed by the covers then they will think that the magazine is of a higher standard.

Legal and Ethical IssuesCopyright- this is a law that was created in order to keep peoples work safe that they have created so that someone else cannot use it as their own. This area applies to my magazine as it means through making my magazine copyright no one can copy my magazine and therefore it is safeIP- IP stands for intellectual property, this is something that you have physically created, intellectual property cannot be an idea it has to be physical creation such as a book. Through IP you can stop people stealing your name of your product or brand, your invention, design or look of your product, things you write, make or produce. This links to my magazine as through IP my magazine is protected from people using my property. Therefore they cant use my magazine name, my articles and my pictures without my permission. You own IP if you have created it, purchased IP from the owner or have a brand that could be trade marked, as well as this IP can have more than one owner, belong to people or businesses and be sold to transfer.IPSO- this is the Independent Press Standards Organisation. This is the regulator of the newspaper and magazine industry. It include things such as:Harassment- this makes sure that journalists do not pursuit in intimidation or a harassment way. You must not keep on trying to question, telephone and photograph and individual. As a journalist if you are asked to leave someone's premises you must to as if you do not this is classed as harassment. This links to my magazine as I will have to make sure I know the laws of what my journalists can and cant do so that my company and my journalists don break the law and get bad press

Page 67: Unit 13

Legal and ethicalCopyright- I will have to copyright my magazine so that no one can copy my name and in order to keep my magazine safe. In order to make your company copyright you would have to register your business this can be done on the internet, all you do is put your details of you and the business and you can make your business copyright, therefore my magazine will be safe and no one can copy my magazine or my ideas without my permission.Accuracy (IPSO)- the press must make sure that they do not publish inaccurately or misleading information, this includes pictures. Once this is spotted it must be fixed immediately, also if appropriate a published apology. My magazine as a publication will have to report fairly therefore my magazine can not publish stories that aren't fair. If this does happen I will have to change it immediately. The data protection act- this is the law that protects personal data in the UK. This is the law that control how my customers information can be used by my organisation, these are data protection principles. When my magazine takes people information for things such as memberships I will have to be careful not to take advantage of the information that I am holding. There are many principles I will need to follow such as only using the data accurately and not keeping it for longer than I have to, therefore once my magazine does not need it, it should be deleted and taken of the system. When I collect people data my magazine will have to be careful and keep all the information safe and secure so that no one else can access it.

Page 68: Unit 13

Calendar Events

In my magazine no dates will come in to clash with my magazine as all the concerts that are hosted will be nearer to the summer, this is because big venue arenas such as Staples Centre in Los Angles will not be in use as the sports seasons are finished, therefore it will be much easier to organise big concerts for my artists such as Dr Dre. On my magazine I have a puff promotion of Chris Brown concert in the staple centre arena this would be launched in the summer.

Witness statement comments

Page 74: Unit 13

Witness statement analysisAs you can see I have a lot of what went wells in my witness statement, this is good as it means that my work had more positives than negatives. As you can see it on the witness statement it mentions that I have done a good overview of the magazines and of the connotations of the magazine, it also states that I had a good overview of the content of the star appeal and the target readership. This is important as target readership is the key to getting sales, this is because f I understand my target readership I will make the magazine suit them. For example I wouldn’t have a hip hop target readership and try to sell pop magazines to them as this wont interest them in any way. Other strong areas in my presentation where the social media slides and the advertisement slides. In the even better if box I had a few corrections to do for my magazine presentations. These where corrections such as, the advertising, why did I put my magazine advertises in my competitors magazine, therefore I would have to talk about the cost, why I did it and how this will help my magazine beat my competitors. This is an important area to improve as the right advertisement will really get my magazine up there with all the worldwide magazines, therefore I will have to-do some research and improve these slides and say how my advertisement will affect the sales and reputation of my magazine. Another area for improvement was my pre production material. As stated on the witness statement I have not included enough information for each day therefore I will have to go back and add more information for each day so that it can be of top quality. I can include things such as how much each step will cost me to produce. For example, how much will it cost me to create the double page spreads and how long this process will take. The last even better if tells me not to rely on the handout to much. This means that I was reading to much. The way to improve this is to practice reading what on my script and going through the presentation to know what will b coming on the next slide, rather then relying on the script. I could improve this by putting less information on the script and talk more freely, this would make my presentation seem more professional as the publisher will see that the things I am saying are not just from the script but from general knowledge of my magazine.
