What is a Title VI National Resource Center (NRC)?

• Determined by the U.S. Department of Education’s Title VI program

• Established by the HEA of 1965, Title VI, Section 602a

• Centers (or consortia of centers) at institutions of higher education that provide comprehensive education on international/area studies

What do NRCs do?From International and Foreign Language Education:

• Teaching of any modern foreign language;

• Instruction in fields needed to provide full understanding of areas, regions, or countries in which the language is commonly used;

• Research and training in international studies;

• Language aspects of professional and other fields of study; and

• Instruction and research on issue in world affairs.

What are the Areas of Area Studies?

• Africa, Middle East, Asia, East Asia, Pacific Islands, South Asia, Southeast Asia, Canada, Latin America, Europe and Russia, Inner Asia, Russia and Eastern Europe, and Western Europe and Europe, International

What is a Title VI Language Resource Center (LRC)?

• Institutions of Higher Learning (or consortiums) that “centers that serve as resources for improving the nation's capacity for teaching and learning foreign languages through teacher training, research, materials development, and dissemination projects.”

What do LRCs do?From International and Foreign Language Education:

• Research and dissemination of new and improved teaching methods, including educational technology;

• Development and dissemination of new teaching materials;

• Development, application, and dissemination of performance testing;

• Training of teachers in the administration and interpretation of performance tests, the use of effective teaching strategies, and the use of new technologies;

• Significant focus on the needs of those who are teaching and learning the less commonly taught languages;

• Development and dissemination of materials designed to serve as a resource for foreign language teachers at the elementary school and secondary school levels; and

• Operation of intensive summer language institutes.

o Consulting/Advising/General Information for Teachers – providing information on general topics and resources pertaining to the world area of expertise;

o Electronic Resources – having an informative web site or portal to web sites designed specifically for use by educators;

o Visitor Speaker Bureau – providing speakers when available to visit classrooms or teacher events; speakers can be students, faculty or staff;

o Resource Libraries – having a library of materials for use by teachers,

o Simulation Activities – such as Model United Nations, Model Organization of American States.

Sample Programs

Summer Teacher Institute Through the Lens:

Teaching about Latin America through Film

June 5th, 2011 - June 10th, 2011

Millsaps College, Jackson, Mississippi

The Latin American Resource Center and Vanderbilt’s Center for Latin American Studies will collaborated to offer a week-long institute on Latin America for high school teachers. The institute was held on the campus of Millsaps College in Jackson, Mississippi. Teachers studied different aspects of Latin America through feature films and documentaries with specialized faculty from Tulane, Vanderbilt, and Millsaps. Enriching their knowledge of Latin America, teaches developed curricula for increased coverage of Latin America in their school. Housing & per diem allowance for food as well as CEUs were provided.
