“A Virtual Environment of Learning”
VLE & MLE• VLE is a computer system which supports online
learning. • it allows students to interact with learning materials,
fellow students and tutors.
An MLE included both the VLE and the systems surrounding it which include student records, learning
resource management systems, timetabling and
financial systems.
While originally created for distance education, VLEs are now most often used to support traditional face to face classroom activities
The most popular presentation tool used by lecturers worldwide is
Microsoft PowerPoint
How this can be delivered?
• On-Line Learning• E-Library• Blogs• wabinar
Basic models of on-line courses Content + support model
(relatively static e.g. web package) Wrap-around model
(course materials wrapped around by activities such as on-line discussions)
Integrated modelcourse is defined by collaborative activities, discussions and joint assignments.
Essential questions, standards, readings,
publication links, and much more, helps students to full
fill there queries.
The Wireless Device Interface
Advantages of VL Flexibility of time and space Coping with increased student
numbers Sharing and re-use of resources Collaborative work Student-centred learning Reducing the administrative burden Staff development
Limitations • The IT staff who will have to install the software and keep it
running
• Course leaders who will have to redevelop courses to make use of the VLE
• Administrative staff who will, for instance, register students into the MLE which will then pass the information to the VLE
• Resource centre managers who will need to make sure that suitable materials are available for the students.
All of this requires a major staff development effort
Conclusions Problems of under-funded higher education will
not be solved by adopting VLEs
Blended approaches to teaching may offer optimum solutions
Costs and benefits of adopting a VLE need a careful evaluation
•VLEs are changing the way learning and teaching are delivered, and will soon be ubiquitous
•Libraries must reclaim their traditional role as resource managers through a new emphasis on collaboration
•Technical solutions will stimulate organisational solutions
