Little Hydroelectric Power Plant in my
Village
Made by Latvian Comenius teamMade by Latvian Comenius team
Types of Electrical Power:
Thermoelectric power station
Wind power
Hydroelectric power station
Solar power
In Latvia 70% of all Electrical Power is Made by 3 Big HEPPs
Rīga HEPP
Ķegums HEPP
Pļaviņas HEPP
HISTORY OF ELECTRICITYHISTORY OF ELECTRICITY• The first time electrical phenomena was
described in Greece most probably in the 17th century.
• People who were related to electricity history :
History of Electricity in History of Electricity in LatviaLatvia
In Latvia people started to use the electrical energy in 1970. The first electricity companies were found in 19.-20. century. 1939 – the beginning of Latvian power system. In 1955 more power stations began to operate.
About electricity About electricity nowadaysnowadaysIn Latvia there are still some estates where
is no electricity (in Latvia 0,1 % people do not have electricity), because :•some houses are located far from inhabited centers;
• people do not have moneyto pay for the electricity.
HEPPsHEPPsHEPP is power station which uses water to produce electricity. Hydroelectric power stations produce about 7% of the world energy.
Small HEPPs in Latvia
Small hydropower stations began to develop in 1950. From 1945 to 1960 were built 20 small rural HEPPs . In 1998 35 small HEPPs operated in Latvia .
ADVANTAGESADVANTAGESIT IS A RENEWABLE ENERGY
+ Hydroelectric produces much electricity;
+ Energy is rather cheep;
+ The pollution is minimal;
+Stations can operate for many years;
+ They are more economic for home owners than solar power;
+ People will have workplace (decrease the rate of unemployment);
+A HEP produces about 500 Kw per hour, but each family consumes about 200 kw per month.
+ In this river is little fish, so the fish will not suffer as it happens on larger rivers during the spawn (for example, salmons)
DISADVANTAGESDISADVANTAGES
- HEPs will flood neighborhood, bigger areas would be under water;
- Careless people can drown;
- The construction of dam is rather expensive
Small HEPPs in Latvia - 143
In Daugavpils region there are 3 Small HEPPs
Galvāni HEPP Šķivišķi
HEPP
Dubeņeca HEPP
Fild Trip to Galvāni HEPP
What is it???
Wow, what a construction!
Girls find it interesting too
We must see everything…
We must poke our noses into
everything
Oh, a really good fishing place!
Meeting the owner
Danger We have to see all
constructions
On the way home-I’ve got an IDEA!
If there are small HEPPs
in Ambeli
Why not in Shpogi?...
Why?
1. Cheaper electrical energy for 2 schools, ambulance, municipality hall and 2 shops.
2. New work places3. Cleaner environment
Where?Near
Špoģi on the river Dubna
There is already a dam.
It is possible to get faster flow
It would not disturb the kids to relax on the banks of the river
PLUSES
MINUSES
It would flood gardens and pasture.
Fishermen would lose fishing places.
Where?
On the other side of the village
PLUSES
There is a purification plant
Is it really a plus?
MINUSES
5 bathing places would flood.
Fish farm ponds would flood.
Swans and ducks would have to search for new
places for living.
CONCLUSIONCONCLUSIONThere are more advantages than disadvantages. We asked our neighbors, if a HEPP is necessary in Shpogy. Here are the results:
We must work!
1. Assess all + and –
2. Enroll into RTU (Riga Technical University) to study energetic and electronics
3. Make a business plan and rise EU fund
