VOLLEYBALL

Historical Background- The game volleyball was invented in 1895 by Dr. William G. Morgan, a physical education director of the Young Men’s Christian Association (YMCA) chapter in Holyoke, Mussachusetts.

It was regarded as a recreational pastime. The game was originally called Mintonette. The name Volleyball came about after a demonstration game of the sport, when a spectator commented that the game involved much "volleying" and game was renamed volleyball.

Federation International VolleyBall (FIVB) is the international governing body for volleyball and Philippine Volleyball Federation (PVF) is the governing body of Volleyball in the Philippines.

FACILITIES AND EQUIPMENT1. Playing area- The playing area includes the playing court and the free zone. It should be rectangular and symmetrical.

2. Net and Posts2.1 Height of the net-

Placed vertically over the center line there is a net whose top is set at the height of 2.43m for men and 2.24m for women.

3. BALLS- The ball shall be spherical, made of flexible leather or synthetic leather case with a bladder inside made of rubber. Its circumference is 65-67 cm and its weight 260-280g. its inside pressure shall be 0.30-0.325 kg.

Different Skills in Volleyball 1. Serving/Service- This is what always starts the game and helps to keep the game. There are two basic types of serves.

a. Overhand- where the player will throw the ball in the air first, then hit it.

b. Underhand- where the server will hold the ball and swing their other arm underneath the ball to hit it. 2. Passing - is the act of sending the volleyball to a setter so that he or she can, in turn, present the ball to the spiker for an attack. There are different types of passing.

a. Dig/underhand pass- This is the ability of a player to save the ball below the knees after it has been spiked or hit by the opponent.b. Bump/overhead pass- This is the ability of a player to save the ball above the head after it has been spiked or hit by the opponent.

3. Receiving or reception- The ability of the players to receive the ball properly and perfectly going directly to the setter.4. Blocking- This is the primary defensive skill used to neutralize strong spiking attacks. It involves using players' arms to form a wall in front of the spiker, thus making it more difficult for him or her to hit the ball into the opposite court.

5. Setting the ball- This is a critical area of the overall offensive attack. If the set is poorly placed, it can dramatically lower the effectiveness of even versatile spikers, because it limits their hitting options and their likelihood of hitting a kill shot for a point or sideout.

6. Spiking- This is the act of driving the volleyball hard into an area of your opponent's court. Note: spike/set is invented by the Filipinos in 1916 and it was called “bomba” or “Bomberino”
