GSA Overview

Volunteering Here• Key part of the Laurier student

experience• Volunteers are valued and we want to

ensure you have an opportunity to learn and grow with us

• Studies take priority, but important to pursue opportunities outside of classroom as well

What is the GSA?• A not for profit corporation under the laws of

the Province of Ontario• Exists to:

– Be the collective voice of graduate students on campus

– Advocate to senior Laurier admin for graduate students

– Represent graduate students on Laurier committees– Provide services to complement your academic

experience– Ensure grad students’ are served by Student Affairs– Provide individual advocacy and support to our

members– Provide avenues for personal and social growth

What services does the GSA offer?

• Advocacy• Health and Dental Plan• Student LifeLine• Social Development• Student Club Support• Business Cards• ISIC Cards• Textbook Delivery• Funding (over $27,000.00 given out each year)• U-Desk Services• Veritas Café• Study Space• CFS Services• Orientation (Graduate and Professional Student Symposium)• Volunteer Opportunities

GSA Corporate Structure

Board of Directors (BoD)

• Highest body of GSA governance– Develops major strategies of the corporation– Provides direction to Executive (through President)

• Duty to act in best interest of GSA and membership at all times

• Composed of individuals elected (or acclaimed) from each faculty

• 8 spots: 6 held for top vote receivers from each faculty, 2 open spots

• Chair elected by general membership in March at AGM

Corporate Policy• Policy Coordinator– Chair of the Policy Committee– Play a leadership role while working

collaboratively with the VP: Admin to write policies for the GSA

• Policy Committee– Assist in the research process for and

collaboratively write new policies– Review existing policies and make

recommendations for amendments to be Board

Corporate Finance• Finance Committee–Assist drafting a budget –Collect and organize data

related to financial priorities –Review spending & consider

amendments to the budget for Board approval

Accessibility Commissioner

• Initiates programs that generate awareness of the challenges faced by students with disabilities.

• Member of the policy committee & investigates policies and procedures that inhibit accessibility.

• Works with the Accessibility Centre and students with disabilities to improve accessibility around WLU.

Academic & Research

– Review applications and selects applicants• Academics Coordinator and Academics

students• Wellness Committee

– Promote well-being through various activities and campaigns
