Father of Modern Quality Control
• Dr. Shewhart brought together the disciplines of statistics,
engineering & economics.
• He formulated a scientific basis for securing economic • He formulated a scientific basis for securing economic
control.
•One of Edwards Deming’s teachers he worked in the Dell
company in the 1920s.
•Since Total Quality Management of Deming was an offshoot
of Shewhart’s ideas he is called the Grandfather of TQM.
Main works
• Economic control of quality of manufactured product [1931]
• Statistical method from the viewpoint of quality control
[1939]
Industrial Quality Control [1967]• Industrial Quality Control [1967]
Statistical Process Control (SPC)
• Dr.Shewhart believed that lack of information greatly
hampered management process.
• Till Shewhart’s time Quality was controlled by product • Till Shewhart’s time Quality was controlled by product
inspections after manufacture. This resulted in large scale
scrappage and high costs.
• He believed that if the process is controlled for quality the
quality of the end product will be good. He created the
concept of Statistical Process Control method(SPC).
Statistical Quality Control (SQC)
• He premiered the use of statistical tools like Control charts
for the process. Hence his methods are also called Statistical
Quality Control (SQC).Quality Control (SQC).
• SQC aid a manager in making scientific, efficient & economic
decisions.
Shewhart’s Learning & Improvement
(PDSA) Cycle
• He created the PDSA cycle which later Deming popularised as
the Deming’s PDCA Cycle
• It combines creative management thinking with statistical
analysisanalysis
• This cycle contain 4 continuous steps.
Plan
Do
Study
Act
Shewhart believed these steps ultimately lead to
