Father of Modern Quality Control

• Dr. Shewhart brought together the disciplines of statistics,

engineering & economics.

• He formulated a scientific basis for securing economic • He formulated a scientific basis for securing economic

•One of Edwards Deming’s teachers he worked in the Dell

company in the 1920s.

•Since Total Quality Management of Deming was an offshoot

of Shewhart’s ideas he is called the Grandfather of TQM.

Statistical Process Control (SPC)

• Dr.Shewhart believed that lack of information greatly

hampered management process.

• Till Shewhart’s time Quality was controlled by product • Till Shewhart’s time Quality was controlled by product

inspections after manufacture. This resulted in large scale

scrappage and high costs.

• He believed that if the process is controlled for quality the

quality of the end product will be good. He created the

concept of Statistical Process Control method(SPC).

Statistical Quality Control (SQC)

• He premiered the use of statistical tools like Control charts

for the process. Hence his methods are also called Statistical

Quality Control (SQC).Quality Control (SQC).

• SQC aid a manager in making scientific, efficient & economic

decisions.

Shewhart’s Learning & Improvement

(PDSA) Cycle

• He created the PDSA cycle which later Deming popularised as

the Deming’s PDCA Cycle

• It combines creative management thinking with statistical

analysisanalysis

• This cycle contain 4 continuous steps.

Shewhart believed these steps ultimately lead to

total quality improvement.
