• Or else you are in for a challenging year…
• If not, limits your ability to do some non-traditional activities and group work

So what to do?
• Be businesslike!
• Tend to the work at hand: teaching and learning math
• Does not mean you have to be somber, stiff, or overly formal

Establish Routines
• Daily warm up activity– Sets the tone for the class– Immediate engagement
• Post daily objectives– Limit to 2 (at most 3)
• Be consistent– Deviation from routine behavior problems

Set Clear Expectations
For Behavior:• Rules• Boundaries • Limitations
• Do not let anything escalate

Careful Activity Selection
• Is the activity…?– Novel– Challenging– Set up for student success– Conducive to monitoring behavior/performance• Your presence, questions, and feedback are key
• Consider the “fun factor”

Careful Planning
• Good planning minimizes behavior problems
• The best defense is a good offense
