Reggae-ton

What is Reggae-ton?

The distinctive sound of today's reggae-ton is a mix of Jamaican dancehall rhythms, derived from reggae, and Latin merengue, bomba, plena and sometimes salsa. It's heavily percussive beat is called "dembow" and comes from Trinidad's 'soca' music; it fuses electronic dance music, hip-hop elements and Spanish / Spanglish rap to form a compelling, driving sound that has been embraced by Hispanic urban youth worldwide.

Some reggae-ton artist include:Voltio, Glory, Wisin & Yandel, Don Omar, Luny Tunes, Calle 13 and Hector El Bambino (now Hector the Father)

Did it originate in Panama or Puerto Rico?

Some say that it originated in Panama, others argue that this musical direction comes from Puerto Rico; that is actually where the majority of reggaeton singers come from.

Reggaeton actually developed from Jamaican Reggae, but was certainly influenced by various other musical directions, like for example, North American Hip-Hop and Puerto Rican rhythms.

Reggarton was influenced by many different cultures all over the world and has spread at lightning speed.

What is the misunderstanding of the origins of reggae-ton?

Theres a heated debate about whether reggaeton originated in Panama or Puerto Rico. While it seems obvious that the roots are Panamanian, some of the best know (and earliest) artist of todays reggaeton sounds come from Puerto Rico, so the confusion is easily understood.

Reggae developed in the 70's in Jamaica and has gone through numerous changes since then, having been combined with other sounds and rhythms. Panama was the first place where Reggae was performed (by Chicho Man) in Spanish, while the first Spanish rap (performed by Vico C) appeared in Puerto Rico. It all happened in 1985, and in the years to come this movement arrived in other Latin American countries as well as in the United States.

With reggaeton being a mix of different cultures it really id hard to say that it belongs to one specific culture

Why did Caribbeans migrate to Panama?

Historically there has been an invisible line that has segregated Jamaican music and other Latin dance styles. But that line was breached in Panama, a country with a significant Jamaican population that had migrated south to work on the Panama Canal in the early 20th century.

Since the majority of the Panamanian is Jamaican reggae was commom there. Then People from other countries heard of it like Puerto Rico so they started recording music with this reggaeton beat.
