Dear Year 10 Students

Welcome to Cambridge IGCSE English and Literature! This is a two-year course, which

you will take in years 10 and 11. This course is designed to improve your ability to

communicate in English in reading, writing, speaking and listening. You will be guided

through the process of inquiry, gaining knowledge, thinking/evaluating, communicating

your ideas and reflecting on work.

Throughout the course you will become proficient with key reading and writing

strategies and learn to correct and evaluate your own work. You will be exposed to

reading and writing in a variety of genres, as well as regularly practicing verbal and

listening skills.

The goals of this course are to:

o Enjoy the experience of reading literature

o Encourage you to enjoy and appreciate a variety of language

o Enable you to understand and respond to what you hear, read and experience

o Complement your ability to work with information and ideas in other areas of

study, for example, by developing skills of analysis, synthesis and the drawing

of inferences

o Promote your personal development and understanding of yourself and others

o Explore the contribution of literature to an understanding of human concern

o Understand and respond to literary texts in a variety of different forms and

from different periods and cultures

o Appreciate different ways in which writers achieve their effects

o Experience literature’s contribution to aesthetic, imaginative and intellectual

growth

I encourage you to read widely, both for your own enjoyment and to further your

awareness of the ways in which English can be used. Of course, this includes literature

– you are expected to sign up to www.goodreads.com, which is a social networking

site for readers. There, you can make friends, recommend books to others, keep a

track of what you have read, what you are currently reading, and books that you want

to read. You can find similar books to those you have enjoyed reading in the past,

other books by favourite authors. The list is endless!

During the course you will complete three pieces of coursework and sit final

examinations.

I look forward to working with you during this course. I will work extremely hard to

help you to achieve, but I expect the same level of commitment from each of you.

Please do contact me if you have any comments, problems or queries. I am here to

help you achieve at British International School Ukraine and will do everything in my

power to support you.

Best wishes

Miss Parker
