Introduction to Six-Sigma
Welcome
What is Six Sigma?Six Sigma is originally developed by Motorola to
systematically improve processes by eliminating defects.
Sigma is the Greek symbol used for Standard Deviation
of population.
Six Sigma is a statistical measure of quality, which
reflects process capability;
being 99.9997% defect free in process and product.
Mr. Bill Smithat Motorola in 1986
The quality improvement methodologies such as Q.C, TQM, and Z.D. Like
its predecessors, Six Sigma asserts the following:
Continuous efforts to reduce variation in process outputs is key to
business success
Manufacturing and business processes can be measured, analyzed,
improved and controlled
Succeeding at achieving quality improvement requires commitment
from the entire organization, particularly from top-level management
Difference between 3Sigma & 6Sigma
at 3 sigma. . .
•There are 964 U.S. flight cancellations per day.
•The police make 7 false arrests every 4 minutes.
at 6 sigma. . .
• 1 U.S. flight is cancelled every 3 weeks.
• There are fewer than 4 false
arrests per month.
Ingredients of Six sigma

Elements of Six Sigma
•The Customer
•The Process
•The Employee
Methodology of Six sigma
D M A I C• Define
• Measure
• Analyze
• Improve
• Control
D - DEFINE
Define project boundaries (scope) the stop and start
of the process
Define who customers are, what their requirements
are for products and services, and what their
expectations are ?
• M - Measure
Measure the actual perfomance which was
previously planned.
Collect data & Develop a data collection Compare to customer survey results to determine shortfall
• A- Analyze
Analyze the data collected and interpret it,
determine the defects.
Find the solution to minimize the defects.
I- Improve
After minimizing defects improve your target
customer by thinking innovately.
•Create innovate solutions using technology and
discipline
C- Control
Institutionalize the improvements through the
modification of systems and structures (staffing,
training, incentives)
Control undefined problems or action plans
What Six Sigma involve?
Brainstorming sessions to identify important factors
Conducting a few experimental trials
Recognising significant factors which influence a process
Setting these factors to get maximum output.
When to use Six Sigma?
Unknown Situation
In a complex situations
Why to adopt Six sigma?
Process for problem solving
Consistency with results
Six sigma levels
3 levels/Belts
1-Green belt
2-Black belt
3-Master Black belt
How Six Sigma is practised?
-Focus on experimentation.
-Black Belt is coached by champion.
-Results are quantified.
-Stretched targets.
-Projects are of top priority.
Advantages of Six Sigma?
Better monitoring of processes
Better involvement of people
Staff morale is raised
Throughput is increased
Profits go up
Customer satisfaction.
Disadvantages of Six Sigma?
Engineers and managers are not interested in
mathematical statistics
Statisticians have problems communicating with
managers and engineers
Six Sigma Companies
