Why use stories and readers in the class?

• What can stories and readers give?
* Ideal introduction to FL Lg in context.
• Familiar.
Stories:
1. Motivating and fun + attitude FL.
2. Exercise imagination.
• How can Ss be personally involved in a story?
• * Identify with characters
• * try to interpret the narrative
• try to interpret the illustrations
• How can stories and readers encourage Ss´creativity and inventiveness?
Child´s real world
What is reading and listening stories in class?
• - It´s a shared social experience
–Helps build up the child´s confidence
–Encourage social and emotional development
• Kids love listening to stories ( repeat)
So lg items are acquired and reinforced
What can you get as a teacher when Ss listen to stories?
• 1. Introduce and revise Vocab.
Exposing children to Lg
• 2. Develop the child´s listening and concentrating skills:
• - visual clues
• - prior knowledge
• - Listening for the main idea or plot- without necessarily understanding everything
• - Practice and reinforce lexis& structures
• To develop conceptual skills:
• Such as

»Guessing meaning
»Training memory
Readers and the curriculum
• They add a lot in the whole school curriculum• How??• 1. Reinforcing conceptual development: Color- Size-Shape-Time.• 2. Developing learning to learn• 3. Reinforcing thinking strategies: ex.• Comparing, Classifying, Predicting, Problem
solving.
• 4. Developing strategies for learning a 2nd Lg.

• Guessing the meaning of new words
• Training the memory
• Self testing
• 5. Developing study skills.

• Making and interpreting charts, graphs and surveys
• Making and learning to use dictionaries
• Organizing work

Ex. Maths, Science, History, Geo and the environment, Arts and Craft, Music and Drama- Cultural studies
What to consider when choosing a reader?
• Age• Level of learner• Needs• Previous Lg.• Learning experience• Language level• Interests• Degree of difficulty
